Manchester City vs. Lyon

Post by Strange Blue on Wed Sep 19, 2018 7:09 pm

Looks like nobody is putting up the threads these days so here goes:

Ederson, Walker, Laporte, Stones, Delph, Fernandinho, Gundogan, D Silva, Bernardo, Sterling, G Jesus
Subs: Muric, Kompany, Otamendi, Sane, Aguero, Foden, Mahrez

So no real surprises Kun & Mendy out injured so this looks like about the strongest side available.

Looks like Bernardo will play on the wing with Sterling which is a shame because I think we see the best of him when he's playing centrally. Still should be enough to see off Lyon on paper at least. Complacency is the biggest risk here IMHO.

For you guys on here - you can have access to the videos now on here, rather than having to go to our channel - where your views would really help us.

Sorry I can't do any more tonight - gonna be midnight here when it finishes and I've still got work to do before tomorrow.

Probably the worst half I’ve seen us play for a long time. Sloppy slow clueless !!

Evening all! Well this ain’t good. Changes at half time hopefully, Sergio on for Jesus, Leroy for Gundogan with Bernardo moving inside. Not seen us this flat for ages, no pace, no creativity, no spark.

they keep asking why we are flat...

1. Gundongan in midfield, pushes Bernard out right
2. Gundongan in midfield, pushes Sterling out left
3. Gundongan in midfield, wastes a decent set piece
4. Gundongan in midfield, pushes David Silva too far forward as he gets under his feet.
5... can you see the pattern of what is screwing up our rythm so far this season...   ????

No intensity at all, looks like they were trying to sleepwalk through this. Does this have anything to do with Pep not being there to put a rocket up their arses?

I'm being harsh picking out Gundo, but it's all I see every time the ball goes near him...
he's not had a good half...

if I was Arteta, I'd grow a nice hairy pair, bring Gundongan off for Sane at half time,
and Foden on for Delph 10 minutes into 2nd half if we don't pick it up...

Re: Manchester City vs. Lyon

you say that Strangeblue, but the way we play is through midfield,
even the crowd were almost jeering at one point when Gundongan slammed it back 30 yards when we were near their box at one point.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different result

so playing Gundo over and over and yet never seeing any pace through midfield?when he starts we play slower..?

If I were going to pick on one player (Delph’s error aside) I would say Ferna was at fault both times losing the ball in the middle of the pitch. The clubs greatest mistake IMHO was not finding a replacement this season.

Might seem a dumb thing to say but I think one of our problems is too big a squad which gives too big a scope for changes from game to game. There’s a lot to be said for keeping the same core group of 7 or 8 players. Having said that, I still back us to get something here.

Sane’s pace & Bernado in his central position has made all the difference, but maybe it’s been left too late

he is I think..
my point on Gundo was he slows it down.
Fernandinho might make mistakes but all players can do.
It's whats missing form out va va voom if you want, and Gundo just slows that bit.

I think we did much better second half, barring one shot against the post, we dominated, but didn't create enough. thats where we need to work going forward.
Personally, I would have hooked Walker or Delph to bring Mahrez on to give us more attack for the last 10..

but we can't become the Harry Kane team.. we have enough players who should step up.
David Silva was pushed into 5 positions tonight. Even a player as good as he is will struggle on that moving across and back again..

I can't really be bothered to get upset by it, as the sainted Liverpool have already won the Premiership and Champions League double this season. Well according to the BBC anyway.

I dont have BT sports and i had to make do with a shit BT stream via Kodi on my firestick. By half time i was suffering from a combination of anger, disappointment, frustration and disbelief at that first half performance. The poor passing errors, the inability to retain possession especially deep in our own half which led to their second goal and the all round slow pace was awful.
I didn't even bother watching the second half such was my frustration, i honestly could not see them improving greatly on that first half to the extent that they would score 2 or more goals.
Gundogan is a waste of space, Bernardo is less effective out wide
and there were generally too many mistakes from too many players.

I felt it was like when we were at our most complacent and lethargic under Pellers. I kept looking for TLF as he was usually the culprit...

Still, it's only one game, it doesn't mean we're out of the competition, but I expect several rockets were placed up several arses before training today.
