City v Burton

Big game despite the opposition...  as they say you can only beat what's in front of you...

We will undoubtedly be playing the league cup team, but sprinkle some big players in as we don't play again until Monday night.

I'd be going for -

                    Muric
Walker  Garcia  Ottamendi  Zinchenko
                Gundongan
            KDB           Foden
Mahrez                               Sterling
                   Jesus

Save Fenandinho, Silva, Silva, Sane, Aguero, Stones, Laporte for the league..

In all honesty, we should be able to play Ederson upfront, but just need to be professional tonight, get a couple of goal cushion for the second leg when we can go easier as more games in and around that leg.

Agree with that team, but I want more than a 2 goals cushion....4 at minimum.

Burton are currently ninth in League 1 and a fair old distance off a playoff place, so I suspect they might view this cup as a suitable distraction and something to aim for.  I doubt they'll come to us and roll over and they certainly won't want to lose at home.  So I think we should afford them some respect, or it might just bite us on the arse.

Burton started the season poorly but are coming into decent form now and have a realistic chance of the playoffs being only 10 points behind. They've already beaten Villa, Burnley, Forest and Boro (all leagues above them) and Shrewsbury. They were never favourites for any of their ties so far.

Their top scorer has been injured and now he's back. He's got 10 goals in 25 games this season.

City XI | Muric, Walker, Otamendi, Garcia, Zinchenko, Gundogan, Silva (C), Sane, De Bruyne, Mahrez, Jesus

Subs | Ederson, Danilo, Stones, Sterling, Delph, Bernardo, Foden

Pretty strong starting XI again. Hoping to get the job done 1st leg. Talk of a delayed k.o. Apparently due to traffic problems.

Nice poacher’s finish from Jesus, just when things were going a little flat. Let’s put this one to bed.

Nothing to moan about there at least not in my book. Nice to see Pep taking the cup competitions seriously hopefully we can get a cricket score going in the 2nd half then play the kids in the return leg,

Not sure how it's possible but even in a 9-0 win Mahrez was disappointing
Shame we didn't have 3 youngsters on the bench

Big plus that Jesus scored 4, regardless of the opponent that still takes skill. I know he has the talent he just needs to get his self belief going. I’m going to hold my judgment on Mahrez until next season he isn’t the first player to struggle to get used to Peps system in the first season & he won’t be the last

Might as well not bother with the return leg. I know you can only pay what's in front of you, but shame on those teams they beat to get here.

I don’t know I think the return leg will be useful to give minutes to marginal players & some more youngsters obviously. I don’t remember Pep playing such strong teams in previous seasons, think he’s really got the hunger this time. If the dippers don’t win the prem looks like it’ll be yet another trophyless season for old Klop. How good will it feel if we win all 3? Don’t think it’ll be our year for the CL though.

Well, I'm happy with that result. We didn't take our foot off the gas in the second half and left Burton with a mountain to climb.  We don't have the toughest of games left this month anyway (with Wolves being the only possible thorn), but it does mean we can focus our attentions more on getting points on the board and bagging our place in the next round of the FA Cup.

With the dippers also having easier games in January, plus not having any cup games to concern themselves with, we need to make sure we can keep up with them and this result means we should be able to do so, as we can play more kids in the return leg.

the return leg is all but redundant now. I wanted a 4 goal cushion to make it an impossible task for Burton on the return, 9 is never going to happen.
the main thing is this second string (cup team mostly) has just demolished 2 teams who could have made life difficult, and in previous seasons have done.  If we have any rotation we now have players to come into each position when asked.

It was a professional performance and shows that we take all competitions seriously. Liverpool rested almost their entire first 11 against Wolves, this shows that they are not interested in the cups and have eyes for only one prize. I'm certain that if that had been City we would have been subjected to huge criticism from the media for not giving the FA Cup any respect.
I also agree that Mahrez was total crap, i lost count how many moves came to nought after he got the ball high up the pitch. His shooting, passing and all round game needs to seriously improve if he is going to justify the transfer fee we paid for him in my opinion.

Well, we'll soon know how single minded they are when it comes to the CL games next month.  If they drop out of that then we know they're putting all their efforts into the PL and this is going to make life harder for us, seeing as we're still fighting on four fronts. Still, I'd rather we tried and failed than didn't try at all.

Ah but lets hope the dippers try that and fall short again, now that would be funny.  I think Klippity will go if that is the case.

Nah Klopp is part of the cult now, no matter what happens he’ll be here next season. After all it’s there year next year.
