Mountain Bikes
Mrs BWTAC has decided that her fat bastard of a husband needs to get fit and loose weight, however, seeing as he has a Gym phobia, purchasing a mountain bike may be his best option, as not only will it get him fit, but also get him out of the house and the mithering womans constant bitching.
So can anyone recommend a decent bike at a price below £200, i've seen a Muddyfox one in Tesco, should have been £300 now £140, any good? Any that i should avoid bearing in mind that i will be using it on the road only.
Cheers.

Re: Mountain Bikes
I have a hybrid bike from Decathlon in Stockport that I use for commute to work. 20 miles a day when I don't take the car
The Tesco ones do seem pretty good value, Muddy Fox are a decent enough brand on them also.
Basically, so long as you are comfy on the bike is the main thing. and get a decent helmet if you are riding on the road.
Also get used to the bike, riding on back streets and footpaths before you get on the road. You need to focus on where you're going and whats coming and not be thinking about how to brake/change gear etc..
in summary, yep, £140 is a decent price on a bike, I can't check all other places for prices etc at the minute but it sounds decent enough.

Re: Mountain Bikes
the carbs aren't really a problem if you're getting pleanty of excercise.
Having read the reviews on the Tesco website seems they are at the cheap and nasty end of the spectrum.
I'd recommend a trip to Decathlon to have a look there. Seems on bang for buck they seem pretty well rated (and I went there).

Re: Mountain Bikes
Carbs turn to sugar - so they are a problem when you are trying to lose weight. Once the weight is off and you do exercise everyday - then carbs aren't a big problem (in moderation).

Re: Mountain Bikes
Daz you fat fucker. I'm on a lo carb diet at the moment & going to the gym 3 times a week in order to get my waist size down about 4 inches
It's difficult to cut out carbs (bread, rice, pizza, pasta,noodles,cerealetc...) & anything with sugar in it BUT the weight does come off you mate
Personally if you're doing any distances on a bike I'd say you'd be better off with a racing bike than a mountain bike

Re: Mountain Bikes
Thanks for the many confidence boosters, you bunch of bastards. Sounds like if i cut out the carbs and the booze, i'll be an Adonis by the start of the season.
Back to the bikes, i went and looked at the Tesco ones today, they seemed ok for what i am after, i'll try and get down to Decathlon tomoz, as i've got a meeting in Reddish in the afternoon.
I'll think i will set up a Bluemoonlegends fat club to give each other ideas about weight loss and fitness, seems it will be quite popular with all the tubsters and cuddly ones we have on here.

Re: Mountain Bikes
Dear Tubs: No carbs, no sugar is the key to rapid weight loss. Plenty of protein and green leafy veg and fruit (berries) - no bananas. Beer has a lot of sugar so - stay off the loopy juice and then you too can be svelt like me

It was me that was persued by a howling mob of knuckle dragging, banjo strumming inbreds.
Anyway, a bike is a good way to tackle your morbid obeisity. Things to consider -
Unless you're going to go down mountains, put a set of ordinary tyres on it.
Weight v Price - Balance the 2.
Make sure the seat's comfortable, nothing worse than having your love spuds constantly chaffed if you plan on doing more than 100 Meters at a time.

Re: Mountain Bikes
my diet would make you cringe Wensdi..
Fray Bentos (full pie) on a tray of oven chips (because they are healthier than fried).. with lashings of HP sauce..
Hollands pies whenver I'm in a rush.
Chippies, kebabs, curries few times a week..
and stopped smoking last year, my appetite went up some more.. hehe

I work on the principle if it tastes good then it must be healthy
but riding and playing football help to keep my stomach in check though it's been spreading out somewhat in the past year...

Re: Mountain Bikes
GEt on Gumtree and get a decent 2nd had one, that's what I did, give it a test ride before buying, take a mate who knows about bikes with you. Don't get a shitty one from Halfords, get a decent branded one, they will have better components. Kona, Trek, Specialized etc....
Check
www.wiggle.co.uk
they may have some sale bikes or x demo, you can atleast compare prices on any 2nd hand bikes.

Dieting's bleedin hard work i think we'll all agree. Cutting out white bread, pastry things, the chippy and beer (you'll be alright with your cocktails tho Daz) work for me, just wish could sustain it longer than i do....ok, no smart replies.
Instead of getting a bike and spending upto 200 notes, get your shorts and t-shirt on and get running round the strrets. You'll lose weight in no time fella.

Re: Mountain Bikes
Good tip Shaken. A run round the neighbourhood is the way to do it. You can eat bread if its whole grain - chips and crisps are a big fat belly in no time. Just read an article in the local paper that crisps are the single biggest cause of weight gain. A baked potato is fine (once in a while). Eat smaller portions 5 times a day - including veg/fruit/protein. Lots of stuff from the tap - no sodas. Beer has a lot of sugar but red wine's okay.

Re: Mountain Bikes
I know I'll get no sympathy here but I'm at the other end of the scale(s). About 10 & half Stone and can't put more on. The heaviest I've been was 11 Stone and even on a diet consisting mostly of pie and chips I'm not even sniffing 11 Stone now. See picture for proof. >>>

Yeah I used to be a skinny twat when I was in my 20s but as you get older you put weight on & it's a lot more difficult to lose it

Re: Mountain Bikes
My advice is them funny cigarettes. They speed up your metabolism, leading to "the munchies", but if you can avoid eating 2 packs of Jammy Dodgers and a family pack of Monster Munch, you should do well.
I should write one of them diet books. I'd rake it in.

Re: Mountain Bikes
From wanting to lose a few pounds and getting fit, it seems i am now akin to Jabba the Hut.
I used to run 5 miles a day, but it bores me shitless, i know exactly where i gain weight and that is through my penchant of liking a drink.
Murph, i have a mate like you, he eats twice as much shit as anyone and still looses weight.
My new bike arrives tomorrow, so i will try and cut down on my ale intake and my aim is to lose about 2 stone. I could always go back to the bad old days of class A's, but i can't afford them these days.
