Eubank Snr thinking back?
Chris Eubank Sr warned his son to avoid hitting Nick Blackwell in the head two rounds before their fight was stopped.
Chris Eubank Sr warned his son to avoid hitting Nick Blackwell in the head two rounds before their fight was stopped.Blackwell was placed into an induced coma on Saturday night after a 10th-round stoppage by Chris Eubank Jr that left Blackwell with bleeding on the brain and a badly swollen left eye.
Footage has emerged of Eubank Sr stepping into the ring after the eighth round to warn his son: "If (the referee) doesn’t stop it and we keep on beating him like this he’s getting hurt."
He advised Eubank Jr to stop the fight with body shots, and referee Victor Loughlin eventually stopped the fight two rounds later.
Eubank Sr said:
Blackwell initially appeared lucid as the result was announced, but collapsed shortly afterwards and was taken to hospital. The next time you throw a flurry like that, if the referee doesn’t stop it then I don’t know what to tell you. I will tell you this, if he doesn’t stop it and we keep on beating him like this he’s getting hurt. Why hasn’t the referee stopped the fight? I don’t get why. So maybe you shouldn’t leave it to the referee. You’re not going to take him out to the face so take him out to the body.
British Boxing Board of Control general secretary Robert Smith said: "I spoke to one of the doctors this morning and he said there is a bleeding of the brain.
"He's in intensive care, he's in an induced coma and he is resting and being looked after by the experts.

Re: Eubank Snr thinking back?
I listened to Steve Bunce and Jonny Nelson yesterday morning on TS...and they said these stories are nonsense and the media are wildly exaggerating what was said and in what context.
They said they have watched all the videos and spoken to people there.
They said, Eubank Snr was telling his son to go for the body, because he was hitting Blackwell's elbows and the head shots weren't taking him down.
They also said the Blackwell's corner believed he could knock Eubank out as they told him "he's running on empty, go out there and knock him out"
Therefore, there were no signs of what was to come after the fight - in fact, the referee stopped the fight because Blackwell couldn't see out of his left eye - not that he thought Blackwell was taking too much punishment.

Didn't see the fight at all. Let's hope the guy makes a good recovery.
It's hard to tell who is telling the truth r if there is some truth from both sides. People in the business, would want it believed that this is just part and parcel of boxing and unfortunate.
Maybe we'll only find out when Eubank Snr tells us exactly what he said and why he said it.

interesting comments.
In title fights, you have guys who are prepared to die for the victory. That isn't right. They do need some protection from themselves and those around them.

Re: Eubank Snr thinking back?
the video is clear, Eubank Snr basically telling Junior that he was going to dangerously hurt the lad as he wasn't going to go down from head shots..
the punches Blackwell took were just non-stop. The referee needs to be prepared to say when enough is enough. but the whole debacle on Channel 5 was Tyson, Fury, BJS and anybody else they could find slating Eubank Jr for not knocking the lad out cold.
It was almost sickening listening to the punditry was appallingly one sided.. and this is after Blackwell had been stretchered out of the ring..
Eubanks old and young should take a lot of credit from Satruday..

I've just listened to the video again a few times and he doesn't say "dangerously hurt"....
He says "if the referee's not going to stop it, I don't know what to tell you.
If he doesn't stop it, one he's getting hurt, two, if it goes to a decision...why isn't the referee stopped the fight?. I don't get why. So maybe you shouldn't leave it to the referee. But you're not going to take him out to the face, you're going to take him out to the body"
I didn't watch the fight, so can't comment on what was said in the punditry...just hope the lad is ok and no long-lasting damage.

Re: Eubank Snr thinking back?
the 'he basically said' part I put above means what was inferred was the damage that was being done.
he did say verbatim as you said..
senior was also trying to get the refs attention to step in and put the lad out of his misery. he was getting minced in there, and just because he wasn't going down it carried on.
his own corner were in the belief he could get a result, they also have the option to chuck that towel in when it comes to that.

Re: Eubank Snr thinking back?
Like I said, I haven't watched the fight, but his eye was a mess.
As you mentioned, the kids corner may have done more - but clearly, they thought he was OK...as I said earlier, they told him that Eubank Jnr was running on empty and they thought he could knock him out, so possibly the kid was OK at that point.
It's a tough one. We've all seen boxers with injuries similar, continue to fight and win...but if he took the amount of punishment you said he did, the corners should know better.

Maybe you need a doc in the corner observing the fighter with the only concern being his welfare.

I thought they already did.Topdawg wrote:Maybe you need a doc in the corner observing the fighter with the only concern being his welfare.
Do they not look at both fighters at the end of each round?

Apparently, the doctors will tap on the canvas to get the attention of the referee and give them a "60 seconds/1 more round or stop it signal.

Re: Eubank Snr thinking back?
Chris Eubank says he told his son to avoid punching Nick Blackwell in the head to protect the stricken boxer.
Blackwell, 25, is in an induced coma after losing his British middleweight title to Chris Eubank Jr on Saturday.
Between rounds eight and nine, Eubank was heard urging his son to punch Blackwell's body rather than his face.
"Even in sparring, I tell Junior to stay away from the head because his punching is fast, powerful and dangerous," said Eubank.
"So most certainly I was saying this to protect the fighter."
Eubank Jr said he knew his punches were taking their toll on Blackwell, who suffered a bleed on the brain after being stopped in round 10.
"If you watch the last round, you can see me easing off," said the 26-year-old Englishman.
He also said he thought the referee should have stopped the fight before the ringside doctor halted the contest because Blackwell's left eye was swollen shut.
However, Eubank Jr's trainer disagreed, insisting the referee - and Blackwell's corner - were right not to stop the fight.
"The kid was always there," said Ronnie Davies. "His corner couldn't pull him out. It was a title fight."
Eubank Jr said news of Blackwell's poor health was "tough to hear".
He added: "We don't go in there to cause that type of damage to an opponent. It is never anything personal.
"No fighter wants to see the man after the fight in any type of serious condition. I'm not going in there to damage someone, I just went in to fulfil a lifelong ambition and become British champion."
After the bout was over, Blackwell was taken from the ring on a stretcher, while receiving oxygen, and later placed in an induced coma.
The British Board of Boxing Control said it was satisfied with how the bout was handled, after suggestions from Eubank Jr's camp and some pundits that the fight should have been stopped sooner.
