Are refs getting any better?

Are refs getting any better?
There's always some controversial decisions in football matches. That's always been the way. My question is, are refs getting better or are they chickening out of some big calls?
Sanchez' 'handball' goal? Not send Gibbs off when he was last man? And any of Slaven Bilic's complaints (I haven't seen highlights yet).
You've got to get the major calls correct. I just think refs make some really bad match affecting decisions and then say I didn't have a clear view etc. There's a claim that claytebburg apologised to Hull players at HT but he's not supposed to be watching any replays ( unless the 4th official told him), that needs investigating for sure.
The clamour for video replays is getting louder and louder. The worry is that they may bring it in for goal decisions and then extend it further later on.
But something has to be done to get obvious match changing decisions right every time.

Re: Are refs getting any better?
The game has definitely gotten faster....for me, I'd have a refs assistant in both halves on opposite sides. They're as poor as some of the refs. The refs have to be very fit to keep up with the game - we see how fast a counter attack can take place from their own box to the oppositions box in under 6 secs....for example;
A corner is taken. The ref normally positions themselves to the far edge of the box away from the corner kick taker. The corner is short and gets headed out at the near post, straight to a left MF player. He plays a long ball over the top to a winger/striker who bares down on goal. Now the winger/striker, could be on the opposite side to the refs assistant, 50 yards away and with the ref now chasing back to the half way line by the time the winger/striker gets near the box...when an incident happens.
This could take place within a few seconds.
The incident would have to be pretty clear cut to give a foul/penalty/red card etc...from that distance.
If a refs assistant was on both sides in both halves, it would at least give them an opportunity to see the incident form 10-25 yards away, cutting down the possibility of a wrong decision.
I think it will be inevitable for video technology to be in the PL within 3 years.
Another thing that pisses me off, is the behind the goal assistants. What do they ever give? I saw the City keeper made a great save from a deciding penalty in the Europa Youth League the other night. The refs assistant stood 10 yards away, adjacent to the goal line, immediately flagged our keeper for actually moving ever so slightly before the kick was taken....when do you ever see that in the main games???

And in the main games, they miss obvious penalties and other stuff. Waste of time.
You could go with two refs, one in each half of the pitch. Less ground to cover so that can eliminate one of their excuses and they can probably officiate until much older if they are good enough.

I'd bring in video refs tomorrow Their use is fantastic in Rugby. I know completely differ game and there are far more decisions required in footy but until it's brought in these match changing terrible decisions by refs will continue to plague our football
