Video Assistant Referee (VAR)

Post by blueboy on Wed Mar 29, 2017 8:28 pm

40 seconds is all it took to overturn a linesman's decision for the goal in the Spain v France game. That's pretty decent.

Looks like the FA are going to introduce it for next seasons League Cup games.

They have to let the fans know what is happening. Last night, hardly anyone knew what was happening. I saw that the ref was listening to someone and thought it must be the assistant, but he was saying nothing. The fans were not best pleased when the goal was ruled out (correctly). No-one could work out why, but you could see the arm raised for the indirect free kick so it had to be offside.

The 2nd decision reviewed took all of 10 seconds to overturn which is nothing. It was a bit odd and I'm sure it will take some getting used to by fans. I can see them ending up like cricket and getting it sponsored.

The one odd thing I noticed at the match was that there were no replays whatsoever.

Just checked that 2nd goal and it was nearer to 40 seconds. Tossers on talkshite said it was 10 seconds last night.

Didn't watch the game so can't comment...but as you said, maybe introduce the format cricket has, where you have a waiting decision on the screen......and it states what the challenge is for.

It'll need refining, but it clearly demonstrates that it works and doesn't really impede on the game. I think they need to have a cut-off time of 60 seconds. If the VAR can't make a decision in that time, it stays with the refs decision.

The ref HAS to make an initial decision (like cricket) and the VAR has to be conclusive to overturn the original call. Would be nice if the linos had the balls to make decisions.
