League title next season...

Post by Topdawg on Tue May 16, 2017 3:59 pm

Maybe a little premature to talk of this when the season has not even finished yet and no-one has been buying players, but does your gut instinct tell you that we'll be in the fight for the title next season? Will Utd or Liverpool or Spurs or even Everton?

I don't think we had the mentality this season. If we can get that sorted, we have a better chance, but I think we'll come up short.

So will Utd regardless of how much they spend and who they buy.

Arsenal will fall away and Everton won't challenge. We'll be helped by Liverpool and Chelsea being in the CL and Spuddies playing at Wembley.

1. I don't think it's been about 'mentality' this season. I think it's basically 2 things. The players were given a chance to play a completely new style of play, which will take time. It's not as simple as playing a 3 instead of a 4 like Chelsea, who had no distractions this season.

2. The other thing, was that the players in defence were given a chance to prove their worth under the system - pretty much 4 or 5 players have come out and said it's took some time to get used to it, but they now see what Pep wants. Whether we should have just bought 10 new players is another argument, but Pep will get who he wants to make his system work, this summer.
And for those in the media that keep going on about "it won't work in the PL"....it worked at Barca and Bayern....both of those teams would have walked the PL playing Pep's style....it's all about getting the players he needs.

3. United will buy more massive names and still fail. Simple as. Probably a top 4 next season.

4. LFC will buy another top player mixed with average others - and again, they'll be pushing for top 4.

5. Arsenal will still be around the top 4.

6. Spurs need to keep their top players AND Pocchetino - which may be hard, as Barca look like they want him and regardless of his connections in Spain, Barca is a massive draw.

7. EFC will be where they always are....top 8.

8. Chelsea, if they keep Conte, will be the team again to challenge. They'll replace Costa with another top striker, but I'm not sure Hazard will stay. They'll still be strong if Conte stays.

As for us...the likes of Kimmich, Mendy, Bonucci and possibly another MF, Keeper and a striker...and I think the bookies have got it right with us as favourites....we'll see a different City next season.

It's been several things this season, but I think mentally we weren't at it in some key games. Monaco away for instance. We've also allowed ourselves to be bullied which isn't a good quality.

Just posted on Ja about it
Don't see the problem with what pep said,City aren't a big club and never have been
Until we consistently win the major honours i.e Champions and Premier league, then we will be in the bracket below
At the moment we are a club that talk the talk but don't do what big clubs do and win the games that really matter, hence the abject CL semi final display last season and the naive nonsense of a performance in this years QF in Monaco
Better side against Chelsea both games but no points to show for it and that's the difference between winning leagues & being also rans.
That's what stops City,Liverpool,Spurs & Arsenal from winning when it really matters,no big game mentality
Utd had it in spades under Ferguson as did Liverpool for 2 decades
Big season coming up for Guardiola,he's been poor this season,a mixture of pigheadedness & naivety which wasn't what I was expecting from such a heralded coach
Not improved on Mancini yet for me,high time they did

PPLF isn't always right you know Dawg.....you don't have to agree with everything he says.  Embarassed

And that's nothing personal PPLF...but Dawg does seem to agree with 'everything' you ever say..... Razz

So what you're saying is that none of those players were in their prime...except for Kolorov???

  • 01 Hart - still under contract with us
  • 04 Kompany - still here
  • 05 Zabaleta - still here
  • 22 Clichy - still here
  • 33 Nastasic - ???
  • 08 Nasri - still under contract
  • 18 Barry - ......
  • 21 Silva - still our best player
  • 42 Y Toure - looks like he'll get another year
  • 16 Aguero - still our best striker
  • 32 Tevez - .......

And you say Mancini was 'finished'....please explain why he was finished?

That's got to be the worst excuse to justify an argument. A Manager, with 5 or 6 world class players in his starting 11, can't beat a Wigan team that were relegated.....and you claim he was 'finished'??? Razz Razz

But Pep still has many of those players from 4 years ago.... scratch

Mancini had lost the players so it was inevitable he was on his way and I wasn't a great fan of his to be honest but the corpse & Guardiola, whilst bringing some decent improvements to the table, haven't really kicked on and improved us as a club
The way players like the twat Yaya have been allowed to influence the dressing room took far too long to sort out.
In no other industry would that bell end be getting offered a new 1 year contract

Pellegrini had a great first season but that was using the remnants of Mancini's squad (which wasn't totally finished) but the club bought in some crap players and a bang average (or worse) manager just to keep the peace.

Since 93:20 we haven't really moved forwards as a team or club. We just make more money now

That, I agree with. Rumours are Hart was binned for the same 'personality' issues.

But, Pep has sorted out TLMLF....he dropped him for 5 months.

I think with 3/4 new players in defence - Pep's attacking style will bring less goals against and more goals finished....imo only.

But that's too simple an argument. Other clubs have improved massively, yet won nothing in that time frame.

The 'club', I agree, did bring in some poor signings when we could/should have kicked on...especially with world class players - sadly, the club brought in 2x mediocre players instead. That's not Pep's fault. I don't buy this "Pep has had an influence on the previous signings for the past 12 months"....I just don't buy that. He may have had an influence on the academy, style of play he wants to play....but not player signings.

He didn't buy Sterling or KDB....Txiki and MP did. Txiki needs to be held accountable for the past 3 years of signings...thankfully, now Pep is here, the signings seem to make sense at least and will only improve the team in the summer - again, imo.

I'm not blaming Pep for the signing. Get yer reading goggles on. Txiki fucked up royally.

But what have we won in the 5 years since our first PL title? One PL and 2 LCs.

That's not much better than Leicester City. Worse than Utd if truth be told. Worse than Chelsea and a shade better than Arsenal.

That's in terms of winning stuff. So other teams have (or haven't) spent massively and actually win stuff.

TBF, I have seen an increase in effort since he came back - for 4 or 5 games, but I see the likes of Wanyama having the same, if not more, influence on the game.

Better than Liverpool and Spurs....better than United by far!!

Tell me how much the following teams have spent since 2012:

Chelsea
Liverpool
Arsenal
United
Spurs

I know how much.

Trophy winners:

Chelsea: x2 PL...X1 FA Cup...x1 LC

United: PL....FA Cup...LC

Spurs: zero!

Arsenal: x2 FA Cups

Liverpool: LC

City: 2 PL...FA Cup...LC...LC...

I'd say considering where we've come from, what we've spent compared to other established teams and what we've won....I wouldn't be too unhappy. Let's not forget where we were 10 years ago.

I said since our title win in 2012 (when we really should have pushed on). And I don't really care what others have spent because I can guarantee you that we've spend a bundle too (Kev, Raheem, Stones and there's no change from £150M). A few off the top of my head (estimates).

Jesus £30M
Otamendi £27M
Mangala £42M
Bony £26M
Sane £35M
Gundogan £25M
Fernandinho £25M
Nolito £13M
Navas £15M
Bravo £16M
Fernando £12M
Roberts £12M
Jovetic £20M?
Negredo £18M??
Rodwell £12M

Those guys cost at least £300M. Add the trio of £50M signing (ok, Raheem was a bit less) and we are over £450M. I'm sure we'd be over £500M if we include the ones I missed out (Unal, Moreno, Rulli, Garcia, Willy etc.).

So we've all spent big, and we can spend bigger than most if we want to so to talk about others spending money is a bit naughty.

your point is you tend to use stats to support your argument, which can be useful if you bothered to go with my point that SINCE we won that title, in those 5 years we've not won the most. We're actually behind Utd. and Chelsea.

Not content to go back to include 6 years, you go back an extra year to include our FA cup win!!!!! Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Yes, we're so much better than we were 10 years ago but my point was, and still is, since that first PL title how have we done and we've seriously underachieved.

But we've won 3 trophies in the same time frame that Chelsea, United and Arsenal - plus LFC, have all spent heavily and won more than most of them (in your time frame).

Yes, you'd have expected us to have made bigger strides - I agree....but you have aimed most of this at Pep....when it should be aimed at Txiki...that's my only argument. Very Happy
