Tonking teams

Post by Topdawg on Fri Jun 16, 2017 7:01 pm

I think I've done this before, but we are not really giving opponents a good old stuffing anymore.

During Bobbie's title win, we scored 4 goals four times, 5 goals twice and 6 goals twice.
During MP's first season, we scored 4 goals six times, 5 goals twice, 6 goals twice and 7 goals once
During Pep's first season we scored 4 goals four times and 5 goals twice (at the end of the season)

I miss those absolute drubbings we used to give teams. These days, I think we 'manage' games more. Maybe our players were hungrier back in the old days and wanted to keep on scoring.

Do you think we'll get back to those drubbings this season? I sincerely hope so.

Simple...teams have spent heavily themselves, hence improved their overall team quality.

Yes, they'll be the odd day when a team gets a thumping, and maybe we'll be on the end of one (Everton?).....but on the whole, those days have gone.

IMO.

Watford should have been a 7+ but we seemed to slow down

That's my point Moony, we just manage games that we've won rather than keep the foot on the throat.

I think giving teams a proper thumping when we get the chance is important.  How the hell do we instil fear into teams - especially at home - otherwise?  Having tons of possession doesn't bother anyone, it's the prospect of a battering that will be worrying. Yes, it may lead to teams being ultra defensive, but why give them hope?

I think part of the issue was the lack of subs to bring on. I can see this season, we'll have a much stronger bench and if 4-0 up, we can rest some and bring on some younger, quicker legs.

Last season, I think many players were resting their legs once the game was won.

I really don't think it's a Pep methodology...look the scores Barca and Bayern racked up under Pep.

Pep was saying that he wanted more but the players held back.

I don't understand what's going on If the players won't listen to him

He's said it a few time after matches now, so that concerns me. We would complain about MP for the same thing

We used to complain our players weren't up for it  with MP and, sometimes, it's been the same with Pep. But to say the players haven't been listening to him goes beyond that

Just post me where he actually 'meant' what you're inferring to....like the players decided to give up on what he told them and did their own thing

Not sure that was the case Dawg....remember Thierry Henry?

Classic example of a player - not doing what he's asked - and was brought off. Didn't see that last season with us.

5:15 to the point where he describes what happened - but the other stuff is worth a watch as to what Pep tries to do.

I'm sure he said it after the 2nd leg in Monaco and somewhere else this season.

I didn't actually read it. Too busy mate, but I'm also sure the players (maybe ferna) said so too
