Benjamin Mendy and Ilkay Gundogan are on the road to recovery but neither will be available for Manchester City’s first game of the season at Brighton this weekend.
Pep Guardiola says the pair are recovering well but feels Saturday’s tea-time kick off against Chris Hughton’s side has come to soon for them to be involved.
Guardiola has also spoken of the danger he feels newly-promoted sides pose, saying City will have to be on their guard for the trip to the Amex Stadium to combat the threat Brighton will pose on their return to the top flight.
“No [Mendy and Gundogan are not fit]. I think soon [they will be back] but not for this game,” he said.
“My experience of being a manager, always the beginning of the season the new ones are the toughest ones.
“We spoke and I saw last season how tough is this league.
“The teams that arrive, in the first four, five, six games they are so complicated.
“But we try to win the game.”
Guardiola denied he is under more pressure this season after City’s summer transfer activity saw them bring in five new faces.
Bernardo Silva, Ederson, Kyle Walker, Mendy and Danilo have all joined, giving his squad a more vibrant, energetic look.
But the Catalan said: “I feel the same pressure. We are going to see at the end of the season what happens.
“Every game is complicated.”
