City v Liverpool - Live Thread

Post by blueboy on Sat Sep 09, 2017 9:50 am

First topic message reminder :

Massive game today. Think LFC have looked pretty devastating when they can get behind the back of teams, just like they did against Arsenal, albeit, Arsenal were garbage.

Mane and Salah will either need to be pushed back into their own half, or we have to give them no space wide and behind us. Watching the video with Phil Neville, he actually made a good point about our LB position and playing Danilo there, as he's right footed. When they cut inside, like they like to do, it'll be on to his right foot...so it may force them to go wider where they don't want to be.

Either way, Vinny being out, AGAIN, for a big match, will be a big miss.

Will Pep play Sergio and Jesus? Sergio has scored against LFC is his last 5 matches. Or, will he fill the MF and push them back, as LFC prefer to go inside and through the middle?

One things for sure, we MUST take any chances that come our way.

great result but the first half performance was poor, especially at the back.

obviously the mane sending off really did change the game coupled with the 2nd goal before HT.

Klopp pretty much gave up then. Dippers heads were down in the 2nd half.

That first half shows us (again) that Otamendi can't play in a 3 if the opposition have pace up top and target him. That's happened in both the last two games and he's been hopelessly exposed each game.

We need to change something there. We can't keep on doing the same and hoping for the best.

yes I did Moony. I was fearful for our defence. With or without Kompany, Otamendi looks like he's going to be targeted and he'll be troubled by pace. That's been the case the last two games and I can see all teams targeting him when he starts.

Only kidding, watched most of the game whilst making my winter Hedgehog house!!

Ederson: brilliant until his injury
Walker: did OK....nothing great, but no mistakes
Stones: could easily have been MOTM but for the 5 goals. Brilliant today.
Otamendi: against good, quick strikers/wingers - utter liability.
Danilo: absolutely solid game
Mendy: frightening going forward, but equally as frightening in defence. An upgrade on Kolorov though...just.
Fernandinho: Apologies, thought he was finished, but another sublime performance.
KDB: do I need to say any more about this absolute genius?
Silva: Quiet for most parts, but did what he needed to do.
Aguero: thought he was excellent today. Did all the dirty stuff for the team.
Jesus: gonna be a star, it's that simple.

Sane: wow, that's how you attract the Manager's eye. What a brilliant 2 goals.
Manga: did what he needed to do under no pressure.

Pep: got his tactics spot on today. About time he got some luck.

All round...what a statement to the PL..

10 men or no 10 men, we dominated and bullied Liverpool today. Stopped their attacks on the whole. Clinical....that was the word today....and about time.

you asked who predicted a city win. If you are asking rhetorical questions, you should let us know.

He had no one else, yet he substituted him with Mangala Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

He chose to stick to his guns (stubborn) and play with a player who was exposed somewhat against a poor Everton team and a kid up front.

I daresay this Liverpool team is far better than Everton's and Salah, Mane and Firmino are far better and more experienced than the kid at Everton.

Huh? That makes no sense whatsoever. Re-read and come back with another 'hole-digger'.... Razz Razz Razz Razz

He made the right sub at the right time with Ota. Why keep a player on the pitch when you're winning 3-0 who could get a random other yellow card? Makes no sense whatsoever.....and he wasn't playing against Mane, Salah and Firmino for more than 50 mins.

What's EFC got to do with today's performance by Otamendi? He didn't get sent off or dive in for Calvert-Lewin's pull back for Rooney's goal - WHAT HAS THAT GOT TO DO WITH ANYTHING???

He was poor today. He was exposed and got found out. He gave away another stupid free kick for diving in...but what's to say Mangala wouldn't have done that? He was left without Kompany, so he's hardly gonna put a player in for the LFC game who wanted a move to Inter just over a week ago!!

Now....stop digging, build a bridge...and you know the next bit.  Wink

get a hold of yourself mate - you're coming across like a bitter.

You made an argument/point that Pep got the tactics spot on. So I mention that Otamendi was, basically, a bag of shite against Salah. As he was against Everton.

So much so that he was switched from left to right in both games.

How can the tactics be spot on when you play exactly the same and get the same bag 'o shite performance from otamendi?

If he'd played Otamendi on the right of the 3 from the start, then you can try to say he got the tactics spot on. If we'd been a couple down early on because of Otamendi, like we so easily could have been, you wouldn't be saying anything positive about Pep's tactics.

You've basically said something wrong and are now desperately trying to defend your comments rather than admit you are wrong.

Sometimes you just talk too much shit bluey and are too one eyed to accept you're wrong. You're still blathering that the tactic to have otamendi in the three CBS was spot on after he was exposed in the last game. And he was shown up again as not being good enough.
I'm sorry if you're so blind that you can't accept that.

I'll not say any more on this because it's an open and shut case.

Dear oh dear.....what IS your point with this?

I said Pep got his tactics spot on. It doesn't mean EVERY single player had a brilliant game, but his tactics were right.

You've done nothing but bleat away like a little bitch, about Otamendi and how shit he is and how Pep got it all wrong for playing him, when really, the alternative was Mangala.....???

Yet, yesterday, you picked this team with Oatmendi in it, when Stones was better than any of the defenders today!:

Ederson
Walker, Mangala, Otamendi, Mendy
Danilo, Yaya
KdB, Silva, Sane
Aguero/Jesus

Just read through all the comments & the bitching.... 5-0 says it all. No point using the yes they were down to 10 Men excuse. We were against Everton & were still the better side. I said after the Everton game I thought Otamendi had a good game & stand by that. His passing & Tackling were spot on in that game 1 mistake in positioning led to their goal. The fact they only had 3 shots on goal said a lot about our defence that day. Today he was shit fair enough the result was right he had a bad day at the office hopefully a one off. As for the comment about booing Milner, I think apart from Money it was more about his comment last season that, At that time the current Liverpool team he was playing in was the best team he'd played in better even than Pellegrini's championship winning side..... City fans didn't take to kindly to that or the fact the previous game against us he really celebrated a goal he scored....

He's well entitled to celebrate a goal because he plays for someone else now, but I didn't remember his comments. Silly really from him. And wrong too.

We were gash at the back for most of the first half. The goals and sending off masked our deficiencies.

As for Everton, they're turning out to be rather crap.

I'm not sure we were crap at the back...and I'm not just being confrontational, but how many shots on goal did they have?

I remember the Ederson save from Salah...and then the ball over the top for Mane. They actually had 3 shots on target, all game and apart from a spell of 15 mins in the first half, not sure they troubled our defence. Salah with a tame shot and a corner straight to Ederson.

Otamendi was rash and his passing wasn't great yesterday.

Thought Stones was excellent.

Mendy is a beast going forward, but with Otamendi as his cover on the left, he's got to choose when he goes and when he stays. Maybe Mangala may be an option or even Danilo on the left of a 3.

Think Pep has to stick with a 3, as it creates so much more space for Walker and Mendy. A 4 would stifle that and allow the opposition more control in MF.

Watch the first 30 minutes again. Off the top of my head, otamendi dove in on the edge of the box to give a free kick. He also dove in when Fernandinho gave away a free kick on the edge of the box (after the foul). He got skinned by Salah when he should have put a better cross in.
He tried to step up and play offside when stones was the last man thus playing salah(I think) onside.
After that, he stayed deep next time to play someone onside.

That's four poor pieces of play right there, probably in the first 20-25 minutes. I'm not having a go at him per se, but he had no chance against Salah's pace.

The yellow card he picked up was after a poor attempt at a clearance which went straight to salah who then nutmegged Ota who scythed him down

Not sure who that reply is to, but if you read what I put for the player by player:

Otamendi: against good, quick strikers/wingers - utter liability.

But as I also said, what's the alternative with Vinny out - Mangala, a player who wanted to leave just over a week ago and hasn't really played much football? Pep used Danilo on the right of a 3 and it worked well. Maybe he could have shifted Danilo to the left of a 3 and Otamendi onto the right - but then he'd be up against Mane. Hence, my point that Mendy, even though a beast going forward, has to choose his times when he goes and stays and assists the likes of Otamendi.

Also, let's not forget, Mane and Salah will do that to most defenders in the PL this season, not just Otamendi....especially a team that plays 3 at the back. The only way to ensure it doesn't happen, or limit it happening, is to play a 4 and tell your MF's to assist the full backs...but that limits your attacking options and is certainly not Pep's style, nor do I want it to be.

Remember, before Mane got sent off, we were 1-0 up and also had a couple of other chances.

Salah had the one that Ederson saved, then the trickle shot into Ederson's arms and then an in-swinging corner that went into Ederson's arms....that was pretty much it.

I'm not sure you can expect to limit LFC to NO shots on goal for 90 mins - not sure anyone in the PL can. They're a very attacking team so will always create chances.

I think Otamendi had a poor game, but he's been fairly consistent in the others and done OK. Remember, no Vinny makes a huge difference - that's why I thought Stones was excellent yesterday as he took up the responsibility and did pretty much everything, spot on.

As I said, watch the first 30 minutes again. I'm watching it now. After 13 and a half minutes, Ota makes a poor pass which hits a dipper player and then gets hit behind Ota. stones, cleverly, comes across to save him.

You said Pep got his tactics right. I disagreed. You said I had otamendi in my team. Which, actually, was true. But you forgot to mention that I had him in a back 4 with Mendy as left back. Mendy has the pace to deal with salah. Ota, quite obviously, did not. I think this had a great impact on his nerves.

With regards to Otamendi, clearly pep got that wrong tactically.
The 3 isolated him against Salah time and again,it was only good fortune/poor finishing that we weren't punished for it.
Not an Otamendi fan but that's not his fault that's all peps,he just got away with it
I thought it was poor reckless management

Have to disagree Rich. Poor, reckless management? We won 5-0, we were 1-0 up before the Mane challenge and had several other chances as well prior to that.

I know you're not a fan of Pep, but bedding in Mendy will take time, from a defensive point of view. He got caught too far up the pitch on a couple of occasions which isolated Otamendi.

As I said earlier, what were the other options? Mangala?

Yes, he could have played Danilo on the left, but Otamendi would have been facing up to Mane then.

Most teams, even Chelsea and United, will struggle against Mane and Salah this season...look at Arsenal last week.

Pep has a choice - play more defensively and lose that attacking-at-pace option, which will mean dropping a striker, or get the defence working more effectively as a unit.

I blame Pep for not buying another CB this summer, that's a poor decision and also blame Kompany for yet again, getting injured on International duty. He needs to make a decision if he wants to prolong his career.

Topdawg wrote:You said Pep got his tactics right. I disagreed. You said I had otamendi in my team. Which, actually, was true. But you forgot to mention that I had him in a back 4 with Mendy as left back. Mendy has the pace to deal with salah. Ota, quite obviously, did not. I think this had a great impact on his nerves.

FFS, what do you want me to say...."Oh Dawg, we're wrong and you're right. Pep should have gone with your team instead of his"?....Jesus, you're sounding like a megalomaniac! Razz Razz Razz Razz

Oh, and we played a 4 against Bournemouth and it didn't work effectively. Wink
