City v Shakhtar - Live Thread

Post by blueboy on Tue Sep 26, 2017 9:13 am

First topic message reminder :

So, does Bravo or Ederson start? Vinny is out. Sterling was given a rest at the weekend, Jesus didn't even play. So plenty of rested players. If Mendy is out, Danilo or Delph will probably play there.

4-4-2? 3-5-2? 3-4-3? 3-1-4-2?

I think he may stick to a 4 at the back if Mendy isn't fit. If fit, he may go to a 3.

Ederson
Walker, Stones, Otamendi, Danilo
Fernandinho
Sterling, Bernardo Silva, KDB, Sane
Jesus

Think Sergio may get a rest on the bench for the weekend, but can come on if needed. Think David Silva may also get a rest on the bench.

Defence are looking really strong though, Vinnie who? And really impressed with Delph too.  And Ederson has got to be our best bit of business, looks rock solid and so confident.

Managed to predict the CCS when it doesn't count Very Happy

Good result in the end but we worked much harder than we had to there thanks to some dire finishing. Hopefully they'll recover in time for Chelsea & thankfully they have a toughie tomorrow so let's hope it's a real hard battle

Tough game first half....obviously had a rollocking at half time...much better.

Delph, still gives us nothing going forward, BUT, what a performance as a traditional LB. Great second half.

Thought Stones was brilliant all game...again.

Ederson...what a keeper.

Aguero and Jesus were very disappointing tonight. Maybe that's the kick up the arse for Gabriel. You have to work your socks off to stay in this team and tonight, he looked like he couldn't be arsed.

Aguero! Dear oh dear....that pen? Had a bet at HT with my lad, that he'd score from the penalty spot.  Rolling Eyes

KDB was much better in the second half.

Sane was excellent....but I'm sure he'll get a bollocking off Pep for being so greedy. 3 times he could have squared it for a simple tap in.

Sterling again.....great pass and run for his goal....should have scored another.

Overall, 2 goals, should have been 5....but 3 points and on to Chelsea we go.

Personaly I'm very happy with the result as blistering says our defense was pretty good & it was tested. 2-0 against team is solid. The best thing Chelski has going for them is dodgy Prem refs bring it on.

"Delph, still gives us nothing going forward, BUT, what a performance as a traditional LB. Great second half." agree, but Mendy although twice the left back definitely has definsive weaknesses. Might see Delph replacing Mendy when we defending a lead late in games.

Is that 27 goals in 8 games this season?

Conceded 2?

That's some going so far.

When you think we've talked about our attacking play....2 goals let in? That's brilliant.

Mendy's not a poor LB defensively....he does his job coming back as well. Delph looks a traditional LB....solid, good on the ball....but no pace to get forward or back, and that's what Pep wants from his full backs. So sadly, unless he needs a proper defender, Delph will still be a bit part player....but what a bit part player to have. Very Happy

They were a far better side than I expected them to be but we do need to learn to be far more clinical
Really pleased for Delph, thought he was excellent and has given Guardiola another option as he doesn't look out of place at left back, far better than the bellend kolorov
On to Chelsea
If we are as sloppy against them as we were in the first half we will get a good hiding

Yeah...agree Rich. We, well Leroy needs to know when to pass and when to shoot. Pep said prior, that they are a good footballing team. Thought we looked pretty solid though at the back...a game we could have conceded in last season.

Let's hope Gabriel gets his game head on. He was average against WBA and poor tonight.

This from a football analyst I follow on twitter:
"So, the way we played Delph, Silva, and Sané today was the Mendy “mend” (haha). Basically, there’s no way to replace both the attacking
power and defensive athleticism Mendy can without hitting the transfer market, and even then, it’s pretty hard. So playing Delph as an
inverted fullback in conjunction with Silva’s interior position draws defenders to the center of the pitch, isolating Sané. The ideal
situation for his pacey dribbling. He’s not the perfect LB, but for a player to have rarely ever played there, he did exceptionally well."

As I said last night SB, he can't overlap like Danilo and Mendy, but is very solid as a LB. The problem for me, will be if he plays against a very quick winger. The idea is that having a quick wing back, pushes the opposition winger back in their own half. Not sure Delph will be able to do that....which will mean Sane having to track back and assist.

I'm thinking Danilo would be a better option if this is the case, unless we go back in for Bertrand in January.

The problem with playing Danilo on the left is what happens when Walker is not available? This way Danilo can rotate in his natural position on the right. I think we will dip into the market in January for another LB most squads have 4 senior fullbacks and we were always taking a risk with having only 3. In the meantime Delph will be a useful stop gap.

Ahh, that's different problem and as you said, no doubt he will play at RB and Delph at LB.
