If Mangala leaves in January...
I think we can all agree that Mangala is probably leaving at some point soon. Whether that's in January or the summer, he hasn't got any sort of future with City. He'd have left last summer if a deal could have been sorted out with Inter or other interested clubs.
But, the injuries to Kompany and Stones have shown us that the cupboard is a little bare when it comes to quality CBs. Otamendi being suspended meant we had Mangala, Kompany and Tosin as our back ups. With Mendy being injured as well, we didn't;t even have the stop gap of Walker being available there,
Stones is likely to be ready to play again towards the end of December. He can't be rushed back because of the nature if his injury. We cannot afford for him to suffer any setback in his recovery.
If Mangala leaves early January, it's a bit risky for me unless we have a quality CB joining us at the same time. Stones will only just be back and Kompany can't be trusted to stay fit so we could easily be stretched again.
We could wait a couple of weeks into January to see how Stones is getting on and even play Mangala in the FA cup, if we get a favourable draw, in order to rest other players after a hectic Xmas schedule.
Timing could be crucial in this, but it's quite obvious we need another quality CB especially if Pep wants to go back to his seemingly favoured 3-5-2 formation with 3 CBs.

Re: If Mangala leaves in January...
We needed a quality CB in the summer....never mind Jan!
We've been lucky that Ota and Stones have come on leaps and bounds, with the support of Walker, Danilo, Mendy and Delph.
It's a no brainer.
See Kimmich is in discussions to sign a new contract at Bayern...that's a shame, as I can see Walker being an ideal CB in coming seasons.
