Michel Platini: Goal-line technology too costly for Champions League
Uefa president Michel Platini says goal-line technology is too expensive for use in the Champions League.
Platini, 57, said he would rather the money was spent on youth football.
"I prefer to put more money into youth football and infrastructure than spend it on technology when there's a goal in a blue moon that hasn't been seen by a referee," he said.
Platini added that he was happy with the five-man referee system, used in the Champions League and Europa League.
Fifa is set to use goal-line technology at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Platini said the technology would need to be installed in 280 stadiums for European football, which the former France international sees as unnecessary.
"It would cost around 54 million euros (£46m) over five years for this technology, so it's quite expensive for the sort of mistake which happens once every 40 years," he said.
"In the Champions League, I'm very happy with the results (of a five-man team). Practically no mistakes have been made and the referees see practically everything that happens on the pitch."
We all know Platini doesn't want it. but is he just making excuses as to why we don't need it?
Saying it would cost too much, when there's so much money awash in the CL is a joke, £46m over 5 years...thats just over £9m a season, and if the teams go halves with UEFA for implementing it to CL standards that'd be about £280,00 each team or £140,000 if they went halves with UEFA. with a costly mistake potentially costing a club upto £30m and more for a single mistake, I doubt any team in the CL wouldn't think the outlay was a no brainer, but with Platini, he's the one who seems to be the no-brainer.

Re: Platini... clutching at straws
Let's get rid of those two waste of time extra officials on the goal line who do nothing. There you go Platini, that's two lots of money saved per game - probably a few thousand quid there (flights, hotels, expenses and wages) EACH match.
Let's say we only have 5 officials for the group stages and onwards...
8 groups play 12 matches each. That's 96 matches. There are another 15 matches to declare the winner so that makes 111 matches from group stages onwards. That's £111,000 that can be saved right there.
If you did something similar for the Europa League, then you'll probably end up with £200k saved each and every year.
If you force the governing bodies in each league to make them compulsory, job done.
It's all bollocks from another bullshitter on the gravy train.

What do those extra officials do? they are on the same side of the pitch as the linesman nearest the goal so anything that happens on the far side is still missed. a total waste of money. This is uefa also dragging it's heels when it comes to technology to eradicate mistakes.

Because the goal ruled offside and the penalty that wasn't given, within five minutes of each other in the same game, weren't mistakes because they didn't want us to beat Ajax.Bewar3them00n wrote:"In the Champions League, I'm very happy with the results (of a five-man team). Pratini needs to go. Now.

I think Pratini needs reminding what virtually actually means! 2 incidents that reek of an agenda to maintain the status quo, couple that with Pratini's & Splatter comments about City re: FFP and it does begin to whiff like a week old camembert stuck down a radiator.... Great footballer, shit president.
