Why do journos call foreign teams by their nicknames?

Reading the report into the U21s training with the Argentinian side and the reporter calls them 'Albiceleste'. Come on, what's the point of that? Are they trying to educate us or impress us?
Why do they call the Italian team The Azzurri or Ivory Coast Les elephants? Do we really need to know???
