Englands starting 11
Well, we all know the selected 23 man squad now. Without picking through Roys squad (as we'll all have our own thoughts on his selection), what do YOU think Englands starting 11 should be for the 1st game on June 11th?
I'm just looking at our midfielders and i've no idea who's gonna play wide left or right, i guess there's only Lallana, Sterling and Milner to choose from.......OMFG!!!!
With England i'm generally a 4-4-2 starter, but i'm gonna change to a 4-3-1-2 formation (as i don't really like any of the 3 named above).....so would pick the following.
......................Hart
Clyne......Stones......Smalling.....Rose
......Alli.......Henderson....Wilshire
...................Rooney
............Kane...........Vardy
Jeez, that was much more difficult than i thought it was going to be..and i'm still not convinced by that team.

but i expect roy to squeeze in milner, lallana and henderson into the midfield as liverpool had far and away the best midfield int he country last season and he'll find a space for spudhead too.

Henderson's shite. When he came on against Australia, he was main culprit for allowing them to get behind us. I wouldn't have taken him or the other crock from LFC.
Hart
Clyne, Stones, Smalling, Rose
Alli, Dier, Rooney, Sterling
Vardy, Kane

Henderson is shite blue and i'd have took Drinkwater before him.....but who do they both play for? Thing is, we only really have Dier and Henderson as DMs......it's a toss up between the 2 who plays imo.
When you look at our midfield, it really doesn't look to clever......not 1 of them makes me think they're capable of winning us a game.

Re: Englands starting 11
I actually think we've got great attacking options in MF and attack...the defence still worries me.
Rooney is like Marmite. Yes, he's a rag, but he has been playing well in the MF role for the rags and looked good when he came on against Australia.
He's the Captain and Woy will definitely pick him, so it's pointless no including him in the starting 11. If he picks Sturridge and Wilshere who are both still not match fit, he's hardly going to drop Rooney.
Dier looks good in the holding role. Alli is exciting going forward. Rooney will pick the right passes for Alli, Sterling and Vardy, plus he's good at free kicks with Kane good in the air and at holding up the ball.
With the two attack-minded full backs, Dier can drop in to a 3 with Smalling and Stones/Cahill whilst we're on the attack. Smalling and Stones are quick and good in the air, so Dier is the perfect defensive-minded MF player - plus he's good to go up at corners.
We know Woy likes Sterling who did OK against Australia. so he can give us pace and Alli has also played wide right for Spurs this season.
I agree, I think Drinkwater should have gone ahead of Sturridge - we don't need 5 strikers, but I guess Rashford can play on the left in a 3 up front if he wants to play that way.

Yeah, that's a fair team there Tony.
That set up allows Shrek n Alli to support Kane....the one thing we can't afford to do though is isolate a lone striker.

Lalana's been shit whenever he's played for England...I wouldn't have him anywhere near the squad, never mind the starting 11. I'd have Barkley over Lalana.
Milner as a right winger? No thanks.

I know Milner is nothing spectacular but he gives 100%, covers every blade of glass & made the most assists for an Englishman last season
I wouldn't have Lalana either but he's better than Sterling (just) & Barkley has been shit most of the season

Re: Englands starting 11
With no other football on, I'll probably watch the Euro games when home.
Watching last night, what worries me is the fact that Woy is still dicking about with formations. We KO in 8 days time FFS!
He said after the match that he's still is undecided on his starting 11....now that's a massive worry so close to the first game.
Just listening to TS....Bob Mills made me laugh when he said...."If Roy doesn't know his team by now, it's like standing in a queue at McDonalds for 10 minutes, get up to the till and start looking at the menu"
I thought Walker was excellent last night - so maybe he has a conundrum with the RB.
If you look at the squad, the nailed on players will be:
Hart
Smalling
Rose
Dier
Alli
Kane
Rooney
Sterling
That leaves:
Walker or Clyne
Cahill or Stones
Milner or Lalana/Wilshere
I'd be surprised if he starts Vardy, Barkley looks like he's a sub all tournament, Betrand also along with Rashford.

Re: Englands starting 11
I was very disappointed with Alli last night, he NEVER passed the ball forward, everything was backwards or sidewards. Now maybe that was to do with a lack of movement up front that this happened, i just don't know. I hate to say this, but we looked a lot more lively and incisive when Whilshire came on.

Re: Englands starting 11
I agree. I think the fact he played Rooney up top, forcing Vardy and Kane wide, didn't help Alli playing that role, as there was a lack of movement up front.
I agree, I think when Wilshere and Sterling came on, we started to get creative, however, that was against 10 men.
I saw the player ratings in one paper and Milner got a 5...and the comments were, Milner has 55 caps for England - please explain how.
Gary Lineker tweeted...."James Milner is supposed to be the answer to our problems....I'm still trying to work out what the question is"
Milner works hard, but he offers us nothing in creativity. Alli works equally hard, so why have two of them on the same pitch? For me, it's Alli or Milner and I'd take Alli's energy and creativity over Milner any day, if Woy gets the system right.

When Walker came on the scene, he looked very fast and half decent. Then he went through a rough period where he looked shit. Now he's looking good again. Just shows you what can happen if you stick by players. Savic got to the CL final and most would take him over Mangala.
Back to England. Drop Rooney and many problems are solved.

Re: Englands starting 11
I agree Dawg, but he won't...so he has to find a system that works with him in it.
I've slightly changed my thinking on the team after watching Walker's contribution - I think he'd offer us more overlaps than Clyne would.
.............................Hart..............................
Waker............Stones......Smalling..........Rose
..............................Dier...............................
.....Alli............Rooney.......Wilshere.....Sterling

Can't argue with that team. Personally, I'd drop GS and replace him with Vardy. I'd even go as far as to drop Wilshere and go with Sturridge and play a 433. I want my front 3 to put the press in the defence all the time.

Re: Englands starting 11
Can't see him starting with Sturridge....if he's only had a couple of sub appearances, he's clearly not fully fit.
I think he will start with Wilshere though....he's given him plenty of game time without over doing it.
Once again Den, Milner just doesn't create enough - you're squeezing him into to your team like MP did with Navas.

Milner is your solid 6.5 out of 10 player. I'd rather have someone that can produce some magic.

Interesting fact.
That was the first time the defence, midfield and attackers had played together.
8 days before a tournament!! This clown has had 2 years since the WC to sort this mess out.
Oh, and WTF is Kane taking corners and free kicks for??
He's a clown, simple as.

Re: Englands starting 11
The starting 11 for the Euros should have at least started one game together out of the 3 friendlies, if not all 3.
May get out of the group, but it won't be Roy's tactics that get us anywhere.

You can't argue with Sterling's stats. Set up all 3 goals. And I'm certainly not his biggest fan as he did pretty much sweet FA for us last season.

I agree, don't think he was great last season, but if we want to play players on merit, he's stood out above any MF/attacking player for England in the last 2 weeks.

Re: Englands starting 11
Please watch the England v Australia hightlights (link below), the assist for Rashford deflected to him, as he hit the defender infront of him....and the ball to Rooney for the 2nd goal was played behind him, making him stop and hit it from 25yrds.
And as said previously, the goal against Portugal was a free cross.
If you want that to be the basis of his inclusion in the team then fine, but he just ain't good enough and his overall contribution matches that imo.
I will honestly be the 1st to hold my hands up if he proves me wrong not only in the Euros, but next season for City....but i won't be holding my breath.

Re: Englands starting 11
I've watched it....but don't be selective. He also set up Sturridge last night with a great bit of play, but because he's lacking match fitness, Sturridge decided to pass instead of just taking a simple chance....to make it 4 assists. And....if his cross was just from open play, why do 99% of crosses not get scored? Simple, because the cross isn't inch perfect like Sterling's was for Smalling.
Jesus, I'm sure me and you can lump a high cross into the box in the hope the strikers will do something great with it!!
