Bert Trautman

Just watched the documentary on his life and all i can say is, what a man, what a City legend.

Through all the adversity throughout his life, he always dusted himself down and carried on. Not only a great goalkeeper, but a real humanitarian, the likes of which we will probably never see again.

Similar to Mario then?

The only man to win The Iron Cross, an OBE and player of the year.

I don't see that being equalled.

The footage of him after he had broken his neck, still diving head first into an oncoming attacker, unbelieveable. These days they roll around if their snood comes loose.

Yeah, i watched that too boy,

Facinating documentary on the whole, but with such sadness throughout. His 5yrs old lad being knock down and killed, which ended up taking his wife too from a broken heart.

Going into the Cup Final with the threat of a loopy Spud fan threatening to shoot him during the game because he'd denied them a penalty in the semi, shows just how mentally strong this fella was.
Having to catch 3 buses from his home to Maine Rd for training and games, can't see Tevez and the like doing that can you?
Being hated, as he was the 1st German to come over and play since WW2.

Despite everything, he still came through it all smiling. People like him really do deserve the title "Legend".

He's a living legend that guy. Makes me wish I'd been around to watch him play.

Try and find the book 'Trautmann's Journey' by Catrine Clay. Its a tough read but well worth it, i was moved to tears when reading about this living legend and his life.
