We dont like Cricket.....
First topic message reminder :
After the dust has settled on another amazing chapter in the life of MCFC my focus now turns to the busy summer of Test Match cricket. With the retirement of Collingwood all the early season talk has been about his replacement in the side, who can bring what Colly did? Grit, Determination, Impossible catches and some canny bowling when needed. The ECB chose Morgan, i'd have gone for Bopara personally because of the bowling option he gives, but no doubt Morgan is going to be a wonderfull player. so the line up for the 1st Test v Sri Lanka is likelly to be :
Strauss (c)
Cook
Trott
Pietersen
Bell
Morgan
Prior (wk)
Broad
Swann
Anderson
Tremlett
This side should be capable of beating Sri Lanka on home soil, despite the talent they still have in their squad even with the retirement of Murali (thank fuck). Dangermen IMO are : Jayawardene, Mendis and, after a great start to his Lancs career, Maharoof (if selected).
Here's to a great summer, and a little reminder of our last succesfull Test series win

Very poor result, at the toughest place to win and the best squad in the division. it still looks like it will be between Lancs and Durham for the title but that was'nt the result i was looking for. Can you predict 700 AO next time please Den
Oh well a good thrashing around in the T20 will get rid of the frustration before we get back to the real cricket.
Roll on friday at Lords, at least England arel living up to expectation

Re: We dont like Cricket.....
Well you will all be pleased to know Murray is being given a leson by Nadal, 1 set up already.
Luckily i was'nt around to see the start of the second test, as 3 early wickets went down. Cook (65no) and Bell (52) led the recovery, 136/4, lot of work to do, the stage is set for Morgan.

486 all out is a fantastic effort after a very poor start, does'nt seem to be much in the pitch for the bowlers, Sri 106/0 from 30 overs, wickets needed urgently.

What a difference a week makes, Sri Lanka 344/2 at lunch, still140 behind but with nothing in the pitch as yet, we could be batting to save this on the last day if things dont improve quickly.

after a good comeback by the bowlers yesterday, the batsmen have built a good lead which should prompt a declaration early afternoon, lets see if we can pull off another miracle like last week.

Two ex city players donned the whites locally in the last week
Nigel gleghorn played for sale in the over 40s league midweek and Dietmar hamann played for Alderley edge 2nds yesterday
It's a wonder more footballers don't play cricket in the close season,if nothing else to keep fitness levels up and most top sportsmen are usually pretty good at other sports

Cant picture Hamman playing cricket, does'nt seem very german to me. Most of the local players round here turn out for the birmingham hospital charity game, but none of the 'stars' do because of insurance problems.

Re: We dont like Cricket.....
After the drawn last test the attention now turns to the Rose Bowl, late start due to the weather but should be some play today, good to have Jimmy back in, more of a wicket threat and not as expensive as his early years. Come on England, wrap up the series in style, then bring on India.

I'm back from my jollies now Tony to predict the scores . Take it 2nd test was drawn then? I've not read any papers for 2wks so i'm gonna have to do a bit of catching up here (as with the footy related things). Looking at the TV text i see Strauss has failed this morn again, but i expect England to pass SL score by atleast 100. I too agree Si, series will be won 2-0.
Right i'm gonna do some catching up on with the footy stuff (no signings yet i see).

Hope you had a good time Den, 2nd test wash a wash out mate, bit like this is turning into. In good shape to force a win out of this one though. Only Strauss not fired this series, must be saving it for the Indians.
Off topic, what do you think of Peter Shirtliff as No.2 ? (for Bury, not to replace Cook)

Its a shame the weather has ruined this test series, but its helped us make another important step up the ranking test side table. I agree Rich, Sangakara does'nt look interested, too much t20 i rekon, he'll be a different animal in the 1 dayers.

Re: We dont like Cricket.....
Hi Si, had a top time thanks mate.
Regarding Shirtliff, i think it's a decent signing for us really. He's been there and done it both as a player and manager, so his experience should hopefully form a good partnership with Barker.
I reckon England'll dismiss SL tomorrow afternoon, conceding a slender lead in the process. Win by 9wkts.

Agreed mate, he has loads of experience, roll on the new season, always good to see the local sides doing well.....except when they are beating City
Good batting from SL has made the draw favourite again, still time to win but it'll take some effort.

Spoke too soon, the weather will win the day again.
On a brighter note, Lancs have Notts 220/6 and Yorkies are giving Durham a good game in a rain effected match, Trust Colly to finally hit some form.

Re: We dont like Cricket.....
The Yorkies did us a massive favour yesterday batting all day for a draw, Durham picked up 11 points and hold a good lead. Lancs have had a great day so far, ended with a first innings defecit, but Mahmood and Hogg have ripped through Notts and have them at 91/7, the rain has stopped play but with a day and a half still to play, lots of time to wrap up the win and pick up some much needed bonus points.

Re: We dont like Cricket.....
we bowl 47 overs, go off for rain 3 times and still get penalised, the rulemakers are pathetic ar'nt they. If Horton and Moore get us to 100 without loss we should win, seamer friendly conditions this morning though, and Trent Bridge is a tough place to play when the conditions suit the bowlers. It'll be a nipper

Do any of you go and watch Lancs?
I can get freebies for the 20/20's and one dayers and don't usually bother, so if anyone wants some, i can usually get them.

I've been to a few T20 matches but not a massive fan Daz, i prefer the longer form of the game tbh. I spent many a summer at OT when i was a kid, bit difficult to get there now, travel costs are crazy atm.

Lancs win by 6 wickets, Stephen Moore finally comes good (124no) 22 points in the bag (pending a 1 point deduction), great result. Durham next up, hopefully Chapple will be back and we can pick up the win to go top

Yep, great win for Lancs.
If Chapple does return next game, would you drop Brown and put Maharoof up the order a bit Si?
Brown had a decent start but seems to have struggled of late.

Re: We dont like Cricket.....
Difficult one Den, Durham have a great bowling attack and if Smith is coming in at 5 then i would'nt be 100% confident of getting 250+. I'd fancy Kerrigan possibly coming in aswell if its gonna be a turning wicket, Saj is very much a horses for courses kind of bowler so i'd think of resting him, i do think Chapple has been rested for this game with durham in mind so minimum 1 change.
AMillionDifferentPeople- Bench Warmer

Re: We dont like Cricket.....
1 change i agree, but i can't see 2 spinners playing or Saj gettin rested myself as he's just collected 10wkts.
I'd drop Brown and put Maharoof at 3, with Chilton, Croft, Cross and Smith next, Chapple, Hogg and Saj at 8 9 and 10 (in any order), Keedy at 11.

Re: We dont like Cricket.....
Thats a good line up mate, Maharoof at 3 is an interesting one, he has batted well coming in down the order so worth a shot, Chapple can bat a bit aswell so Brown would'nt be missed, and a strong bowling attack. Great chance to beat Durham, weather is looking better for next week so should be a good test over 4 days.

Re: We dont like Cricket.....
With 5 of the 8 games remaining at "home", it's imperative Lancs don't lose this game. With having a game in hand, Durham will need the win more than us. Should be a great game.
Anderson's back tonight for the 20/20, could he be in contention to play against Durham next week too Si, or is he not allowed?

After his side strain England will be very unlikely to let him play Den, 4-10 overs is not much and should keep his fitness up inbeween tests. I would'nt have him playing any 1 day stuff anyway mate, he should be playing 4 day county and test matches only, with so much cricket nowadays we should be keeping him fresh for tests, his performances in 1 day ar'nt the best anyway.

very poor effort with the bat. we are bringing it back with the ball though, 74/6 Durham, roll em for 120-150 and we're still in it. Any ideas why Smith, Maharoof and Chapple are not involved?

Re: We dont like Cricket.....
Yeah we've seen a few shit wickets this season, Warwickshire got 8 points deducted early in the season. I can recall a few 15+ first day wickets this year, 17 wickets fell on day one at Essex v Northants the other day, I'm sure 16 fell at Lords just recently aswell. As long as it is'nt a dangerous wicket then we could get away with it.

Re: We dont like Cricket.....
Apparently the "dubious wicket panel" (or whatever they're called) were sent down to look at the wicket but found it to be ok, so no pts deduction should follow.
Benkinstein's given Durham a decent lead, a good start's required from the openers tomorrow and we could be back in it.
