World Cup 2014 Prediction League

PLEASE READ THE RULES, THEY HAVE CHANGED!!

As I appear to have volunteered to do this league, I figure I'd best get things rolling...

I've decided to combine the match results and eventual winners predictors together to make things a bit more interesting, mainly because my original thought of changing the Correct City Score to Correct England Score would be a bit pointless beyond the group stages (watch them get to the final now I've said that Rolling Eyes

) So the predictor has two parts to it:

1) You predict who's going to win the competition, but with a bit more thought: You have to decide on not just the winner, but the top four places:

1: Winner of the World Cup
2: Losing finalist
3: Winner of the 3rd place match
4: Loser of the 3rd place match

You get 10 points for each position you get right, and 5 points if a team appears, but in a different position. So for example, if you predict England will come 3rd and they do, you get 10 points. If they come fourth, you get five points. If they get knocked out at the group stages, then you get nowt. However, if you predict England will come third, you're probably a bit mad. Wink

2) You predict the match scores. Easy enough! As before, you get one point for getting the correct end result and 3 points for getting the exact score. You get 5 points for predicting a correct England score and you also get 5 points for predicting the correct score for the team you predict will win the World Cup. If either of these teams gets knocked out, then you won't get any more 5 point bonuses.

Other rules:
a. Predictions for the places must be in before the first match is played on June 12th and changes aren't permitted.
b. Score predictions must be made before the first match on the following dates:
- Group stage: June 12th
- Round of 16: June 28th
- Quarter Finals: July 4th
- Semi finals: July 8th
- 3rd Place: July 12th
- Final: July 13th

c. Er... that's it!

At the end of it all, the player with the highest score wins. The prize will be the eternal respect of your peers on the forum. And possibly something more tangible, it depends if I can find anything...

I predicted the 1st 4 (in order) in 1990 via the Pools. Think England came 4th, losing to Italy in a play-off...I can't even remember who won, think it was Germany n Argentina in the Final.

I was out on Holiday with the lads when the Final was played and celebrated like I'd won the Pools (literally).....I was a millionaire (or so I thought), but had to wait til Tuesday to read in the paper how much I'd won. My joy was somewhat quashed big time, when I read I'd won £64....and I even had to split that with a lad at work Embarassed

Thanks Leo for doing this...I guess it will take a bit of your time to input, a la Dawg...but cheers anyway.

Daft question...do I need to look at the groups to work out who possibly could meet who in each round....rather than just picking 4 teams?

A link to the potential algorythm would be useful if so,...I'm sure I can find one if you need one.

This link will let you see a wall chart so you know who they could possibly meet in the next rounds..if needed.

No team from groups A, B, C or D will meet any team from groups E, F, G or H before the semi-finals, but which side of the draw they could end up on depends entirely where they finish in the group.

For example, Brazil are in group A and Spain in group B. I'd expect both to top their group and as such they won't meet until the final, but if one of them finishes second in their group, they'll play each other in the round of 16.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, it's up to you whether you try and apply some forethought to it, or just wing it.

... But if it helps at all, this might be of some use: If you can pick out who'll top each group then you can work out where some teams will play each other. If you assume that the winner from each group will win their round of 16 game, then the quarter final matches will be:

1. 1A v 1C
2. 1B v 1D
3. 1E v 1G
4. 1F v 1H

Then the semi finals will be:
1. 1AC v 1EG
2. 1BD v 1FH

So if you guess that Brazil will top group A and Portugal top group G, they wouldn't meet before the semi final, if at all. Not that it matters, because Argentina could well end up second in group H, then knock Portugal out in the round of 16...

I know... Mine hurt just from doing that, and at the end of it all it doesn't even mean anything as it all depends on where teams finish in their groups!

I was thinking more along the lines of predicting scores like the prem, with 5 points for correct England score?

We will know the group matches now to put in, then we do the knockouts as soon as they are known?

Happy to do this, but I may set the score prediction one up too.

Right, i've just been through the fixtures and potential outcomes and by my superb predicting prowess, i have concluded the following:

Brazil will beat Spain in one semi and Germany will beat Argentina in the other.
Germany will then go on to spoil the Brazilian party to triumph and Spain will beat the Argies to claim 3rd.

So, to summarize:
1. Germany
2. Brazil
3. Spain
4. Argentina

Oh, and England will lose to Spain in the quarters after beating the Ivory Coast in the last 16 Smile

After much deliberation... Well, I say "deliberation", what I really mean is, this whole tournament starts tomorrow and I haven't even looked at it until now... But anyway, these are my top four predictions:

1) Brazil
2) Argentina
3) Spain
4) Germany

England gets knocked out in the quarter final following a goal-fest in Fortaleza against the eventual cup winners. And no, it's not a goal fest just for Brazil! We take an early lead, then get pegged back to 2-1, where we level it up at 2-2 at the death to take it to extra time, whereon the heat just drains us and despite a valiant effort, Brazil nick the winning goal with a couple of minutes to spare.

I tend to copy paste the latest contributor and change a few. It was the quickest way to get my numbers down.

Not a lot of quality in the final third again today, frankly, which means none of us have scored particularly highly, apart from PPLF who correctly picked the Belgium v Algeria score.

Oz did best today, he was the only one to call Chile beating Spain.

We lost 3 teams today: Spain, Australia and Cameroon. Only Oz has all four of his predictions still in the competition as he was the only person to not have Spain in his list. Seems like a decent call, now!

It would help if you didn't change the scores in your original post, bud! I can tell from the post that you last made a change at 9:06am on the 17th and that this was the second change you've made. I've spotted three scores you've amended:

England v Italy: Was 0-0, now 3-1
Brazil v Mexico: Was 3-1, now 1-1
Cameroon v Croatia: Was 1-2, now 0-2

Does this look right?

As the last change was before the Brazil game kicked off, I'll let it stand and I've changed the scores accordingly.
