Re: Is it fair on women to raise the retirement age?
Yes but something like this should be done gradually, If your planning pensions etc and your in your 50's and doing what governments tell you ie planning ahead you dont want some torag ruining your dreams at the last minute. So yes its fair but should be done in a fair manner.
On the same subject is it fair for captains of industry to pontificate about unaffoardable public pensions while getting massive payments and unsustainable none work related bonus and pension payouts. Its all very well saying that we, the public, dont pay for them but if we buy their products, use their banks etc etc then its coming out of our money rather than lowering the cost of goods......or is that too simplistic.

i think it is too simplistic. their argument would be that they earned it through a private pension.
I agree that things should be done gradually but someone always has to miss out/suffer.
if you are a woman aged 50, you will have to work an extra 5 or 6 years to get you pension but at least you have plenty of years to prepare if it comes in in 2020.
the closer you are to the line, the less you should have to lose out on.

Topdawg, most banks top private pensions are paid for by the bank, similar too the pay outs by top companies. Its lower management and workers who have to fund their own private pensions, usually with the company and we know how that panned out for Maxwell employees. The sons didnt do too badly though.

I agree lee. the bankers do contribute but it gets topped up massively by their employers which happens to be us for most of them. the sad thing is though, we don't get a say.

It's not a question of being "fair" cos nothing is fair anymore. The state pension (or social security payment) over here for women has already been raised to 66. People are generally living longer - and the authorities see the money pot dwindling. Its the only thing they can do. Women can elect to take a pro-rated (early retirement) payment at 62 over here (but only if you are not working).
