U21s out on penalties
Come on, some shit penalties there. Look into the player's eyes to see if they have the balls to take a penalty. Discuss beforehand what they should do. Don't change your mind. Aim low in the corner and hit it firmly. Nearly all the time, they will go in, even if the keeper goes the right way.
No excuse for a shitty penalty.

Re: U21s out on penalties
I watched it...they were lucky to even get to penalties.
They were destroyed by Germany as soon as we scored the 2nd goal. Absolutely awful tactics by Boothroyd.
After Abraham scored, I sat and watched us for 70 minutes, pick the ball up in the back 4 and completely smash a hopeful pass up the pitch, wanting Abraham to chase a lost cause against 3 CB's....and that must have happened about 30 times. The MF was completely bypassed...and he just stood there and allowed it to happen.
It was embarrassing.
And these are supposed to be the next generation of players coming through.
The Germans all looked comfortable on the ball, never wandered from their plan to pass us to death...we did what England always do, revert to a thinking from 30 years ago....a big hoof up the pitch and let's see what happens.
We've seen it with the first team under Southgate. Play 3 at the back against Germany in a friendly and play really well. Play against Scotland with a 3, get back into the game at 2-2 and then revert to a back 4. It's this old "let's hang on and be thankful of what we've got mentality"...instead of killing teams off if we can.
Until the WHOLE set-up is changed and by that, I mean bringing in some proper coaches and a proper manager who has actually won something as a manager (what has Southgate done as a Manager, or a player for that matter? He was a poor club manager and has only ever had bad memories as a player for England) then we'll never win anything on the big stage.
Now, take the U20's, under Paul Simpson, how can he get a bunch of players to keep the ball, stick to tactics, never wander away from the objective....yet Boothroyd and Southgate can't do it?

Yes, saw some of the game and we got battered to bits. They pressed us making us lash it upfield but we couldn't press them much, so wtf was our midfield doing or what was it allowed to do?
Penalties - not good enough

TBF...Pickford got fingertips to 2 of theirs.
I was worried looking at that whole 'smash it up the field' approach that was allowed to happen. One up front??? It just invited Germany on.

But we could have still got through with 5 good penalties. Sometimes you have to grasp good fortune with both hands. We didn't. Again.
