Re: Basel v City - Live Thread
I’d like to get a couple more before anyone comes on. Just don’t want to let them score a goal or two and then the tie is back on the balance

Too comfy towards the end there....let's not get complacent like Juve. 2-1 up, then miss a pen!
Foden MUST get some proper game time now. Get another goal and get him on. Give these absolutely nothing.
Can see Stones getting some game time as Vinny looks a little all over the place at the back. Leaving too big a gap between him and Ota.
3-0...we couldn't possibly complain about that.

Dodgy start but controlled it after that. A bit lazy in the 2nd half. I would have preferred bringing on players that had something to prove and would go looking for more.

Basel have only lost 6 of their last 25 games in the Cl at home.

Great result Easy win
Good to see David & Sane back Shame Foden didn't get 1/2 an hour but I guess Danilo deserves a few minutes too
Otamendi & Kompany were a lot better in the 2nd but iffy in the 1st
Will have much harder tests but at least we don't have to go too hard in the 2nd leg now

it was interesting to see where he put Danilo on... in the Ferdy role alongside him...
maybe we've missed the £50m signing there??

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think they are better than we made them look. We have a lot of difficult games around the return leg so we really needed a score line like this.

He was touted as a defensive midfielder when we signed him, I think Pep wanted a chance to see him play there with the likes of Barca, Real Madrid etc in mind.

Re: Basel v City - Live Thread
OK...thought Gundogan and Bernardo had decent games tonight. Thought Basel were fucking awful.
Have to agree with a couple of comments...thought Sane looked like he wasn't bothered tonight when he came on. I know he's back from injury, but it was his body language.
Thought Aguero run his bollocks off tonight.
Great to see Merlin come back.
Very, very disappointed that Foden, in a game won at 4-0, wasn't given 25 mins at least. Absolutely no point in bringing on Danilo IMO. Pep knows what he can do, and by the time we progress to the next phase, he won't get in ahead of either Delph or Mendy at LB, nor Walker at RB. He definitely won't get in ahead of any of the MF's if all are fit....sort of a waste of a sub.
Great performance, even though we were sloppy in attack in the 2nd half.
Surely, we can now rest some players for the return leg, with some big games around the corner.
Big result for Spurs tonight...great point away tonight at Juve.

Re: Basel v City - Live Thread
Pep has a really poor away record at this stage of the competition even during the two times he won, I wonder if that played a role in his caution.

I don’t think they give points out in the knockout stage. But it’s all about opinions isn’t it?

It would have been nice to see Foden but I’ll be shocked if he doesn’t get a run out or a start in the return. Even if it’s a dead tie

Pep has sympathy for Basel, saying their winter break had disrupted their rhythm: "A two-month break is difficult to overcome"

From FC Basel:
Man City were a hurdle too high for Basel. The guests were more clinical, faster and simply better. Congratulations to them, see you in Manchester again!

From City watch:
Ilkay Gundogan – 9 (Man of the Match)
Two goals for Ilkay tonight, who said himself post match that this City team will be successful should they continue to play at this level. The only complaint is that the German didn’t complete his hat-trick, with a good chance at 4-0. Nevertheless, a brilliant evening for Ilkay, who was being watched closely by German national team boss Joachim Löw.

Bernardo Silva – 8
Bernardo is really starting to show why many regarded him as the player of the season in a Monaco side littered with talent, and added to his positive 2018 with another great performance tonight. The Portuguese got himself a goal, but more pleasing was his fancy touches, flicks and dribbles, which gave left-back Blas Riveros a horrible night.

There’s a moment near the end where he sidesteps three players. Class.

even if dave & sane are 1st choice last night proved that the replacements are more than capable on the European stage. Thought Delph played really well also.
