Worse City signing ever?
With the news that City are releasing Mangala on a free transfer, is he the worse signing City have ever made? During his time at City he has played very few games and netted around £20m in wages following his £42m signing.

I don't know what he cost, or how much his wages were, but for me the worst signing we ever made was Steve MacManaman. Spent the entire game standing in the centre circle pointing, as if he were some genius conductor of the game.
Hate him.
Hate him.

We did a podcast on boltfromtheblu about players in several categories (criminal/violent, lazy, waste of money etc.) and Steve mcmanaman was up there.

I'm assuming he fell into the deluded and lazy category?

Or (legendary) Glauber Berti, or 'Super' Bob Taylor (as the Gillingham fans christened him before we signed him)?

It's weird to think that at the same time as signing Mango, we also picked up Fernando from the same club (half the name of Fernandinho, half the price, not even half as good) and we got Sagna and Lampard on free transfers. Yet the freebies were better than the two we spunked the better part of sixty million on. And to think that was the season we should've been kicking on after winning the league.

Mangala is definitely the worst especially considering what he cost at the time.

JO. Leo I actually thought Fernando was half decent saw him have some good games for us. Certainly nowhere near as bad a buy as jo, tal ben haim and probably a few others if I really thought about it.

Re: Worse City signing ever?
To be fair, Oz, I think Nando wasn't given much of a chance to shine, as Pellers seemed to prefer to play two DCMs - Nando and Dino. More often than not, the ball would go through the middle and both of them would be looking at each other, which isn't a great sign.
But then I think two DCMs is a stupid idea anyway as the idea is to have one man who can break up play by reading the game, something that's hard to do when you're only concerned with half of what's happening ahead of you. I've found the best in this position always play alone. Look at GazBaz - not the fastest player by any stretch, but was always exactly where he needed to be. NDJ made up for his lack of reading by his speed of attack, and Dino has been able to demonstrate his ability to read a game since he's not been saddled with a counterpart, something which has enabled him to kick on and become not just invaluable, but a distinct absence when he's out.

Steve 'feckin' Daley. All went pear shaped thereafter.

I think Steve Daley was a decent player, but the transfer fee was always going to be thrown at him . Still remember the excitement when we bought him, gutted when it didn’t work out.
Far better than the original Greek tragedy that was Samaras! Found his natural level at Celtic.

You can chuck the Italian version in with that which was Bernardo Corradi. Useless.

but they both kicked an actual football in a blue shirt and scored too.. thus I revert to my original option of a signing who never even made the field...

To be fair, Corradi made Samaras look competent. I watched him in a training session and he couldn't even score in that!Ashtonianblue wrote:"Far better than the original Greek tragedy that was Samaras!"

Corradi scored? Blimey, I must've missed that!Moonchester wrote:but they both kicked an actual football in a blue shirt and scored too.. thus I revert to my original option of a signing who never even made the field...
Aaron Mooy never even put on our shirt, does that make him terrible? I'd say not, seeing as he helped get Huddersfield promoted, and I think we even made a few quid on him too. I'd have thought we'd have to at least see them play for us before we decide they are useless.

Fair point. I guess it depends upon what the criteria is for worst signing. If it was for thuggery and reputation damage, then Ben Thatcher would be up there.

Or Danny Mills, if only he was 10% of the player he thought he was. Still makes me angry to think of him in a City shirt. I’m annoyed now!

Danny fucking Mills. Still making a living out of being connected to us, even though we all think he's a complete tosser.

Well we're all agreed on that one. Danny fucking ugly bastard Mills. Loves football so much, he sat on his contract for two years and did nothing. Piece of money grabbing shit.

At last he has finally achieved something. But knowing him I bet he would see it as winning a City fan’s poll.

Re: Worse City signing ever?
Only just noticed this topic, agree with all the duds mentioned, especially McManaman, but David Seaman wins it for me. Worst keeper I’ve ever seen in a City shirt. His ‘retirement’ and replacement by David James kept us up that season.
