Football will never be the same again Empty Football will never be the same again

Football will be a very different industry when this is all over.

We know the football industry is a somewhat filthy, rich and greedy industry but some have really excelled in the last few weeks in pushing the level of crassness to new heights.

We’ve had far too many ‘discussions’ as to when the season should start again by self-interested parties such as the premier league, tv rights holders and clubs (especially those in the upper leagues).

Talking about a ‘world cup style’ two-month mini tournament, with players and staff in some kind of isolated world, just to get the league over and done with, whilst the country could still be in lockdown with the death toll, at the very least, in the several of thousands.

We’ve had eight clubs prematurely write to CAS to try and ensure that Man City aren’t allowed to participate in next year’s Champions League if their appeal against a two-year ban isn’t concluded in time.

Seriously, the average football fan, or the average citizen, has far more important issues to grapple with right now. Be it from how to keep your loved ones safe during this crazy time, to how to feed your family if you haven’t got money coming in to how to teach your kids calculus or fractions, football is now a mere irrelevance.

Once, we, as fans, dedicated almost every moment to the beautiful game but now we realise what’s actually important in life.

No-one should be paying the satellite companies for their sports channels (because there's nothing to watch). Everyone should have either paused or cancelled their subscriptions.

BT/SKY will be losing tens of millions every month because of this. Without football, and other sports, they are probably losing even more in lost advertising revenue.

When the next Premier League rights come up for auction, they probably won't be able to afford to pay as much as they did last time. In fact, they could lose out to someone new (maybe even someone from the UAE). A new entrant to the market that won’t be suffering from football treating fans (both match going and armchair) as fools.

The huge risk for BT and SKY is that they won't recoup their massive outlay if they have to bid big again. Both in terms of subscribers (many won't come back after having lost interest or being unable to afford to because of the tanked economy) and advertising revenues would fall due to this and the fact the advertisers will be poorer and some will have gone out of business.

The same will happen for sponsors as some go out of business and others cut back on expenses. Some clubs are going to be hit really hard if their sponsor goes out of business and they have to find a new sponsor who might only pay half what they were getting before.

And, remember, most clubs borrow money based upon what everyone thought was 'guaranteed' income from tv deals and match day revenue. Lenders will want their money back and may have punitive clauses in loan contracts if there is a delay in repayment.

This will all have a huge impact on what clubs earn. Lower tv deals, lower commercial income, lower gate receipts. And this will have a knock-on effect on what they can pay in transfer fees and salaries.

All businesses associated with football will be hit hard and will have to come begging to fans to come back to their subscription packages and match tickets.

FFP will change drastically or even disappear as many clubs would fail the current criteria. Suddenly, owner investment might be seen as a good thing.

Football, like the world, will have to press the re-set button with significant changes from top to bottom. It will recover, as the world economy recovers, but may never be the same again.

Totally agree Ray probably about time if you ask me. The trouble is there is the chance to get it right when it does recover with salary caps, no agents etc but I hold out little hope they will. Cesspool will carry on as if nothing happened.

The can't have salary caps and agents will never go away. It will eventually get back to where it was. All we can hope for is that it takes many many years to get there.
