Changes in the summer Empty Changes in the summer

Post by Paulpowersleftfoot Sun May 30, 2021 7:50 pm

With Aguero & Garcia off this summer and the ongoing need to constantly freshen up squads, who do we see as genuine targets rather than paper talk and who do we see as surplus to requirements ?

Goalkeepers
No need to change

Defenders
Left back still an issue
Mendy very poor, will have to take a big hit to get him out of the door
Leaves us with Ake Zinchenko & Cancelo who can play there but none are natural left backs
Right back position is ok with Walker & Cancelo
Centrebacks again ok but wouldn’t be surprised to see Laporte going which would be a shame but Stones Dias & Ake is pretty strong but would like more cover if Laporte does go

Midfield is well stocked,no real need for major changes

Forward line is where we are a bit thin
Sergio going leaves us without a genuine goal scorer,Jesus is a busy player but will never be a genuine no 9
Haaland & Kane are obvious targets but I wouldn’t be shocked to see a left field signing (like Dias ) emerge

Possible outs for me would be
Mendy
Sterling
Laporte
Jesus
Possibly as makeweights in transfer deals ?

Thoughts ?

I’d agree with most of that Rich, apart from Laporte, I really would be surprised if he left.
I’ve been saying for the past year that we should be going for Tielemans as a natural future replacement for Fernandinho, but unfortunately I think his cup final goal has probably increased his profile and increased his price.
As much as I think Kane would score a shed load of goals for us, I think Levy would pull our pants down over the fee for a player that isn’t exactly injury free.

I wouldn’t want to lose Laporte either but he doesn’t look happy to me so wouldn’t be shocked to see him go
He’s changed nationalities to get a cap or two  Smile

I suppose his change of national allegiance shows how determined he is to play, so maybe he won’t settle for being third choice next season.

I think Stones is always liable to make mistakes so I would prefer Laporte to play alongside Dias. Other than that I agree with everything else that has been said

i can see us going for a striker like martinez of inter or dyballa at juventus. 2 good strikers who have a good work ethic. i would like to see us take another look at ahour at Lyon as a box to box midfielder but good in defensive areas. I think Fernandinho has come to the end of the road and needs replacing i like rodri but am still uncertain if he will be ferna's natural successor. left back is an area where we could strengthen but i don't see it as a major problem as we have as previously stated adequate cover.

Mendy and Sterling have to go imo.
A forward is a priority....and I reckon we'll get Kane.

Mendy has no future at City. I would like a LB that was better and more reliable than Zinchenko.

Laporte might scarper because he's third choice. That's weak. Stones was faultless for a good few months until we wobbled a bit defensively towards the end of the season.

Fernandinho hasn't signed a contract extension so we may need a body there.

Up front, I'll be happy with Kane and Grealish.

I think and hope that Laporte & Fernandinho will stay . Ferdy has at least another year in him & Laporte is vital as Ake isn’t  good enough cover. Sterling will hopefully go for a fair wedge enabling us to get either Kane or Haaland. Would love to see Grealish as well but we would have to get rid of several more players then. In that case I can see Mendy, Silva and possibly Jesus going too.

I like the look of La Ligas Swedish young POTY - Isak. Only seen him once but he looks strong & skilful. Cheeky swap for Jesus ?

Disagree about Ake. I think he will become the Dias partner we need.

As for what incoming we need a centre forward
Looks like Levy will nor allow Kane to sign for us until after the 1st game of the season. So Harland or Lukaku

Who excites you the most? Who can make something happen out of nothing?  For me, that Mbappe and Haaland.

I agree with the outgoings Sterling and Mendy just don't deliver enough for me.
Mbappe would go a long way towards dealing with our inability to turn copious amounts of possession into goals, not convinced that Haaland is the type of player that would suit Pep's style of play, he would certainly be an asset in dead-ball situations due to his height, but overall?
Left-back is an area to be addressed once and for all as it's been an issue ever since Zabba left.
Laporte may want away but that would not concern me too much, Levandowski bullied him for his goal in the Spain v Poland game on Saturday and he has struggled since being ousted by the rejuvenated Stones during last season.
In terms of replacing Fernndinho, Rodri is not in the same class and can be hit and miss at times. I would prefer somebody like Declan Rice who would also qualify as homegrown.

For me, the two I’d like would be Tielemans and Mbappe. If not Tielemans then Declan Rice.
Players that I don’t want to see in a City shirt next season: Mendy, Stirling, Kane or Haaland. For me, Haaland looked extremely unimpressive against us last season. I think the money being quoted for him is ridiculous.
