Re: European Club Rankings
PPLF, i can't take that site seriously.
they have the odds for the league and we are neck and neck with utd before the weekend.
we win 5-1, they struggle to a 1-0 and they are stronger favourites for the title?

Re: European Club Rankings
Try reading the methodology - fairly complicated but statistically sound. The reason why the rags have gone up is because, historically (and that's what the calculations are based on - last 3 years results) they've been better in the second half of the season.
As I said, staistically sound but as has been famously said, there are lies, damned lies and statistics - we should hopefully prove that past performance is no guarantee of future success !!

i read a bit then gave up.
as you say, stats can be somewhat misleading. utd may win the league but they haven't shortened since the weekend. not in my book anyway

Re: European Club Rankings
Nor in mine Dawg but, because of what I do for a living, I can understand why, statistically, the probability (distinctly different from the possibility) of them winning the league has gone up.
All we have to do is win it, unbeaten, for the next 3 years then, the way they work it out, the probability of us winning it in the 4th year will be 1 (100%) !!

Re: European Club Rankings
don't tell me you are an actuary volley!
i studied maths but tend to go with gut instinct.
utd's form over the 2nd half of the season was known before this weekend's matches so there really is no sound reason (statistical or otherwise) for them to become stronger favourites after both teams win.

LMAO - I could tell you but.................................
Statistically, because there is less of the season left, and that is the part of the season they historically perform best in, there's every reason, statistically, for it to have gone up. It would probably have still gone up even if they'd drawn or lost. The way they work it out it may still increase once it's mathematically impossible for them to win it.

Re: European Club Rankings
However, enough of this bollocks - we're not going to let them win it !!
Actually, the longer they think they have a chance of winning it, the better, more of a downer for them when they don't !!

Re: European Club Rankings
well, their methodology is pure bollocks.
there is less of the season left for them to make up the deficit.
well, my fingers are crossed that we can hold our form for long enough

Using that methodolgy Volly they're going to be a one massive downer when we beat them in the cup, all the rags I know are convinced they are going to beat us at the Etihad

Re: European Club Rankings
Hey - it's not my methodology Nijinsky, I can just understand it !!
They can think what they want, it'll make a change for us to go into a derby as favourites, and rightly so, they'll have to play a lot better than they did at the theatre of shite.
Awww, poor ikkle rags, are the noisy neighbours keeping you awake at nights?
Never mind, you can always "Concentrate on the league" - oh, wait a minute, you don't have much chance there either !!

Re: European Club Rankings
That methodology must be bollocks - it has us down as sixth favourite in the Champions League. Which means we should be knocked out in the quarter final.
I wouldn't mind getting that far!
