Honest assessment by Nasri reharding Bayern stuffing...
Samir Nasri admits City are still years away from achieving their goal of becoming Kings of Europe.
But the Blues midfielder reckons fans shouldn’t be too down hearted by Wednesday night’s Champions League German lesson by Bayern Munich.
Many still consider Barcelona as the world’s best club side. However, the former Arsenal star believes that tag now firmly belongs to the Bavarian giants.
“We were full of ambition because we played them in a friendly (the Audi Cup) and we played a good game, but this was totally different,” admitted Nasri after City’s tame 3-1 surrender at the Etihad Stadium.
“We don’t have the experience of playing together and getting results in the Champions League.
“For two years in a row Bayern have been in the final. It’s not just about talent, it’s about cohesion, playing together.
“We are getting there, we are getting to know the new manager but it takes time.
“If we had played any other team in the world it could have been a different result but they were way better than us. We have to understand that and do better next time.”
Asked how Pep Guardiola’s new team compared to his old team at Barcelona, Nasri insisted: “For me, they are better. You saw the result last season, they smashed them (Barca) 4-0 and 3-0. Seven players play for the national team as well. Every year they only sign one player so they always have the same team. So, it’s easier to build something when the year before you have won everything.
“The manager has arrived, changed the system but he has good players who understand it really quickly.
“I think the fans know. For the first time here I’ve seen players from another team coming off and get a standing ovation.
“The fans knew we couldn’t do anything about it even if we’d been playing at our best.”
City’s defeat still leaves them second in Group D with every chance of reaching the knock-out stages for the first time. Much will depend on their two games against CSKA Moscow, especially the away fixture on October 23. Certainly Manuel Pellegrini’s side will hope to have sealed qualification before the final group match against Bayern on December 10.
“Bayern were better than us in every way,” conceded Nasri. “That’s why they won the Champions League last year.
“Of course, it’s our target to reach where they are, but that team has been trained together for four years.
“Now they have a world-class manager as well. He is making them play the same way as Barcelona.
“I think we’ve just played against the best team in the world. We could see a lot of difference between us and them and we are going to work to be better by the time we play them again.”
