Favourite childhood City player?
Dennias Tueart for me.
Scored a hat-trick and got sent off in the first match I ever went to. We beat Hertlepool 6-0. Everything has been a disappointment since then.

Difficult to pick just one. But if I have to choose it always comes back to one player for me - Mike Doyle.

Probably Tueart, but it changed week to week. Always loved Big Dave Watson, Mick Channon was another and Kazzi Denya.

He died in a car crash in America, but it was quite a few years ago now.
Its a pity we didn't get him a few years previous, as he was nearing the end of his career with us and he was pure class, same with Bernabia.

I remember Deyna signing, also remember him in the 74 world cup. At the time, soviet block players weren't allowed out until they were 30, hence his age when we got him him.
I remember listening to the radio in school when wew played AC Milan in an afternoon game, and all the reports said how brilliant he was.

Lee - I remember wee Bobby very well and he was the type of player who, when he got the ball, produced that air of expectation in the crowd. Great player but not as good as Bert. I once met Bert Trautman when he visited the boys club I played for. He was brilliant - stayed longer than he had to just to talk to the lads. The only other player I remember meeting was Don Revie and he was a really genuine bloke. As you can see I am bit ancient!

Norfolk, the first player to score in 2 consecutive Manchester city owners of the FA cup (copyright) finals. ...Possibly the most naturally gifted drinker and footballer of the 20th century including that Irish bloke. He visited our school along with sandy wan and bert lister with the latics. Great bloke and liked talking about city as well as Oldham.

Re: Favourite childhood City player?
Thinking of where the team as been in the 30 odd years that I've supported them and som of the shit I've had to watch there are quite a few. So to help me out one from each area of the pitch.
GK - Englands number one, Englands, Englands number one - Tony Coton
DEF - Andy Hinchcliffe
MID - Paul Lake
ATT - Niall Quinn
It's quite suprising how many players I have liked down the years. The one who I always pretended to be on the playground was David White. I played the same position and just like David I was fkin fast and as the years have rolled on I also got fat.

Re: Favourite childhood City player?
There's fuckin' loads... Joe Corrigan, Colin Hendry(mainly because I met the guy once when City toured Ireland), Big Dunnie, Paul Power(how can any City fan not like him after his winner in the '81 semi tache or not), Ali Benarbia and little Dicky himself, Paul Dickov... Every bit as much a 100%er in his day as Tevez is now but with less quality than Tev obviously.

Paul Power!!
Paul Power always sticks in my mind as my fave childhood player....
Not really sure why... probably because i kept getting his sticker for
my Panini football league sticker book, with glossy silver
club badges too!!!.
I remember always getting that (I think) Polish player to with the wonky teeth,
can never remember his name.

Hey mashipx, as a literate ne'er do well you can spell it any way you want. As long as we understand it who gives a toss! Having thought long and hard about my favourite City player - it's still Bert Trautman!

Norfolk - having just read Trautmann's Journey - I understand why!! Great read - and a very sincere guy who gave his all not just for City but the other clubs he played for and managed.
Didn't support City as a child as I was born the other side of the pennines - but raised two boys in Manchester - and obviously I too became a follower. I think Dennis Tueart and Shaun Goater are two of my personal favourites.

Re: Favourite childhood City player?
Hi Wensdi - I think like you I found it very difficult to pick just one player but Bert was one of nature's gentlemen. I used to like Joe Hart - he could run like a gazelle and sometimes he even took the ball with him. I swear they based the road runner cartoons on Joe, he was that fast.

Re: Favourite childhood City player?
Sorry Lee - I meant to tell you that "The Passing of an Age" was a good read too. I can see that due to Trautmann's heroics of playing on - in that famous Cup Final, 'Nicker's' achievements have largely been overlooked. Instead of being known for the 'Johnstone final" - it was remembered more for Bert's trauma - and his resilience.
Norfolk - did you mean Joe Hart? Joe Corrigan?

Wensdi, i don't think Joe Corrigan could run at all, never mind like a gazelle. I think Norfolk is confused.com.

Re: Favourite childhood City player?
He made some good saves tho' Boy, watched him last night make a couple in a re-run of Cup classics against Ipswich and QPR. Thought maybe Norfolk saw him run like a gazelle at some point which I missed when I went into the kitchen.

Re: Favourite childhood City player?
Stop picking on me! The bloke I was thinking of was Joe Hayes - used to play inside right and was really fast. Unfortunately not always with the ball. Great players in that era - if my memory is now working correctly the 1955 team which lost to bloody Newcastle was:
1 Bert Trautmann
2 Jimmy Meadows
3 Roy Little
4 Ken Barnes
5 Dave Ewing
6 Roy Paul (c)
7 Billy Spurdle
8 Joe Hayes
9 Don Revie
10 Bobby Johnstone
11 Paddy Fagan
I was in hospital having my tonsils out and saw the match on an old black & white TV which had been lent to the Manchester Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital (in All Saints at the time) just for the cup final.

I remember in the Forces there was a picture very similar to that avatar in the hospital. It had pride of place over the beds in the recovery ward and had a message - it said "If this turns you on - congratulations - you're still alive!" I guess I'm still alive.

There are only a few of those I remember Norfolk,
Bobby Johnson of course, Spurdle,Barnes and Fagan. For some reason my brain refuses to acknowledge that Revie played for us but that could have something to do with later Leeds games....OK ye and Bert as well, he didnt do badly in the Johnstone final.

Lee, you're a terrible fella - but I like you! Brings it home to me that I must be old since I can remember watching that team play but missed out on the glory years in the 60s because I was away in the RAF. What I like now about the present day team is the air of anticipation and the sense of adventure. Loving every minute of it - especially when we get all those jealous comments from other teams' fans.
