Union got involved and, hey presto, he's got his leave agreed.

Yeah, well they don't let us as parents bring in Unions to argue our case. I tried to get my youngest who was 13 last year, to be able to leave school 2 days earlier last summer, so my family could come to NYC for a week whilst I was working out there.
Straight - "no" and the schools policy was then sent to my wife.
It would've saved £390 per flight for each of my lads.

I'm lucky as the schools here aren't happy but do nothing. Maybe the ages have something to do with it (5 and 6) so they really won't be missing much if away for a couple of days.
We came to Manchester earlier in June when we had a long weekend here and the teachers weren't overly happy about it but just shrugged their shoulders. Then the fuckers had a last minute strike so it didn't matter so much.
Teachers can have a last minute strike but they aren't happy taking kids out of school. Why can't the kids go on strike?

Like anything else in society...one rule for them and one for us.
So, besides the 2wks he's been allowed to sod off on his jolly, does he still get his usual 10wks holiday entitlement aswell......or did he feel that's not enough and wanted more? Wanker!!!

He's on unpaid leave so he'll get his normal hols as well. If you're earning £60K+, maybe you can afford to have two weeks unpaid leave.

Re: Teacher - double standards!
I once inadvertently took my son out of school for two days when we went on holiday a couple of years ago. When we got there, he told us he should be in school, so we called him in sick and got away with it. It was the end of term, they'd only been watching DVDs for the previous week anyway.
But then I got a letter saying about the importance of being in school and the fines they'd levy if we took them out. Then they went on strike for a day, so I very nearly wrote them a letter to fine them for having my kids out of school, which consisted of the £60 per child spot fine, plus loss of earnings for having to look after them. I wish I had, now...

I wish everyone was allowed to sue the school if they were unable to provide the services they are supposed to. Teacher off sick? I want to see the sick note from the doctor.
It's just so easy for local authorities to fine us for taking kids out of school, littering, putting the wrong rubbish in the wrong bin etc. but when they make a mistake it's human error etc.
The local authorities need to be held accountable too.
