Sadly, he won't, because it's on a football field.  But yes, it's nothing short of common assault and if he'd done that on the street, he'd be on a charge.

An outright ban is the only way, but we know that this won't happen either because everyone will say, "But what about his career?"  Tough shit, he shouldn't go around pretending to be Mike Tyson on the football pitch.

I really don't see how the Police can't take action. It's not boxing or MMA....punching an opposition player is outlawed. 

I'd like to see the Police one day, approach a club and tell them they are looking into possible assault charges. Let the CPS see if they can prosecute. Or, the FA/PFA approach the Police.

If players realise that the Police can take action for something like this, then maybe they wouldn't even contemplate doing it.

I remember an 'old firm game in the 80's when there was a bit of an argy bargy on the pitch and i think it was Terry Butcher and the goalie Chris Woods that were amongst those charged by the police at the ground for breach of the peace or something. Basically, punching somebody on a football field is no different from any other public place in terms of the law.Didn't big Duncan Ferguson get done for aggro on the field?

Several arrests made from the pitch invasion at Villa. How come the police noticed them and not this thug who knocked someone senseless without provocation?

Yeah, possibly, but the cops had already felt his collar a few times before that for beating people up.  Anyway, he was a fucking psychopath, do you remember when he was burgled when he was at Everton?  When the cops pitched up, they found one of them had been "detained" and had to be taken to hospital!

I'd say that was the least the burglar deserved. If they came into my house, they'd need an industrial dentist to remove a baseball bat stuck in their gob.
