Re: Disgusting....
Apparently they aren't the only ones. It happened in america over the weekend when someone made a comment during a minute's silence. i've heard that disrespect has been displayed elsewhere too.

Re: Disgusting....
I agree, it's totally disgusting. I can't believe that, in this day and age, we can still have a newspaper like the Fail masquerading as a "proper" paper! I mean, can they not even get their facts correct? Well, we know for a fact they can't just based on the number of times they misreport stuff about the club we love, so what makes us so sure of the accuracy of this?
It seems to me that the Turkish fans were chanting "Allah Akbar", which basically translates as, "God is Great". Last time I checked, this is nothing like booing. Granted, maybe silence would've been preferred by us, but can we make room for the possibility that this is their way of saying they disagree with everything that ISIS has done? And let's not forget, Turkey also suffered at the hands of these loonies and nobody's done a damn thing for them, no silence, no messages of hope, nothing.
This sounds like the Fail doing their usual right wing tub thumping. We would be best served by not paying them any attention.

I know! And you hear some people going, "All these bloody refugees, and none are going to Muslim countries!" I always point to Turkey and say, "Erm, Turkey is Muslim". But then some people are just latent xenophobes, I guess.TMG wrote:Here here Leo And if you think it's bad here having to take a trickle of refugees plus terrorists disguised as refugees, just think how many Turkey have got !!! £2 million +
Yeah, I think that's a good way of looking at it. We don't consider applause to be disrespectful. I feel there's a cultural thing we don't really know about, which is being misrepresented. And in any case, chanting "Allah Akbar" is nowhere near as bad as what normally happens when the Turks and Greeks get together. Makes the Old Firm derby look like an OAPs bridge tournament!Topdawg wrote:Maybe it's like sometimes we have a minutes applause rather than a minutes silence. Who really knows.

Re: Disgusting....
The negative response was immediate. As the boos rang down, Turkey captain Arda Turan and other players gesticulated to the bleachers in efforts to get the fans to cut it out. After the match, Turkey’s manager Fatih Terim took the fans to task for their inconsiderateness. From L’Équipe:
“First, it is unacceptable that the Greek anthem was booed. Who did that? How do we justify to the world what happened here? Our custom is to respect our neighbors. If we were the victims of those whistles abroad, we would be devastated. I grew up in an area where it is mixed and where we respected each other.”
Then, continuing to the violated minute of silence, Fatih Terim showed even stronger: “These whistles damage the image of our country. There were two matches on Tuesday canceled because of this terror. This is not child’s play. Terrorist threats are very serious. We must think. We can not remain passive in our country facing what is happening. It’s not us. You realize there is not even a minute’s silence. My God. I cannot justify what happened. But if we act together, we can prevent the sport from being sacrificed to terrorism.”

Re: Disgusting....
First, the writer notes that in the aftermath of the bombing of Turkey’s capital Ankara that took over 100 lives and injured more than 400 others just over a month ago, there weren’t any similar shows of solidarity during international matches. The boos, as distasteful as the writer admits they were, could’ve reflected Turkish fans’ frustration of that lack of consistency. This sentiment was echoed elsewhere on social media.
Furthermore, the article points out that during a moment of silence in Turkey for those very Ankara bombings, fans also chimed in by booing. The point being, fans there rarely sit through moments of silence quietly, and the boos of yesterday weren’t necessarily any more callous or mean-spirited than usual.

Re: Disgusting....
Have no problem with twats like those in Turkey, booing a national anthem. Backward fuck-wits live everywhere.
But when, after an attack on Paris has been described as a 'religious attack' by the very people who organised it, and their battle cry is "Allahu Akbar"...why use "God is Great" as a chant during a proposed minutes silence?
And bollocks, if you try to make me believe it was shouted as some sort of defiance against the terrorists.

Oh no, no confusion Leo. My 'utter bollocks' comments was directed at what was wrote in some of the replies on this thread.
My 'generalised' comment was to your reply about 'you believe what you want'.

Right, so now I'm confused.
When you made a generalised comment about some replies on this thread being "utter bollocks", were there any in particular you found to be especially, erm, bollocky?
I'm just wondering now, because you've clearly got an opinion, otherwise you'd not have posted anything at all.

Right, I'll explain what I meant by both comments. In BOLD
Utter bollocks...was in reference to:
It seems to me that the Turkish fans were chanting "Allah Akbar", which basically translates as, "God is Great". Last time I checked, this is nothing like booing. Chanting Allah Akbar doesn't get chanted at most games, so why chant it during a minutes silence in respect of a terrorist attack that claimed the lives of 135 people, in the name of a religion?
Here here Leo And if you think it's bad here having to take a trickle of refugees plus terrorists disguised as refugees, just think how many Turkey have got.
Not sure that had anything to do with the thread.
Maybe it's like sometimes we have a minutes applause rather than a minutes silence.
Whatever next?
"Erm, Turkey is Muslim". But then some people are just latent xenophobes, I guess.
Not sure if this was directed at me or the newspaper article - but considering I'm married to a woman of mixed Indian race, I doubt it could be me...though I do have my own views on these things.
And in any case, chanting "Allah Akbar" is nowhere near as bad as what normally happens.
Chanting this during a minutes silence, is hardly the norm at these matches, regardless of what they do during normal matches between these countries.
Generalised point:

Not sure if this helps or hinders the discussion?

Right, now we're getting somewhere.
Most of what I wrote was a devil's advocate attempt to redress the racist shite that the Fail churns out on a regular basis. The Sun is no better, but at least it doesn't try to cover it's blatant xenophobia by pretending to be a credible paper. The amount I hate the Fail is so great that I was even prepared to give Turkey's fans the benefit of the doubt, which is more than they deserve.
You're probably right about most of what you say, but I do have to take exception to this:
But crucially - and this is the bit I want you to pay attention to - this does NOT include anyone on this forum. Irrespective of personal circumstances, I've not seen any evidence to suggest any of you guys buy into any of that nonsense. You may be an arse sometimes, Bluey (as we all are), but I don't believe you're a racist.

You've taken me out of context here. I'm referring to the increasingly loud section of racist idiots who pollute our fair isle, some of which were commenting on the newspaper article. They are the ones who get sucked in by the media's inaccurate reporting and therefore contribute to what I believe ISIS is trying to do: Start a holy war by forcing mistrust between Muslims and everyone else.blueboy wrote:"Erm, Turkey is Muslim". Re: Disgusting....
I have my own views, even to the point that my wife calls me and her father 'racist'.
Now, I guess it depends on how somebody interprets the meaning of 'racism' as for me, it's morphed and used by many on occasions, when it's simply nothing more than a convenient reply/answer.
I read a lot. I love reading and especially about history, World Wars and religion....even though I'm an atheist (of sorts).
I was only having a debate last night around the dinner table, with my 18yr old, about the reasons behind the attacks in Paris.
I hate to use a broad stroke on this whole debate, as I'm sure we all have our own, personal opinions and views on it and I do not want to dig deep and hurt anybody's feelings by over-expressing my own opinions. I'm happy for all to have their own views..whether I agree with them is another matter.
I came across this last night whilst looking for an interview with Nafeez Ahmed to show my son.
It's probably a little unrelated, but it got me thinking about the ideology that you refer to.
I thinks she makes some interesting points...maybe a little harsh on the lady who asked the question, but still some valid points (IMO).

Re: Disgusting....
I remember seeing that video a while ago and, yes, whilst she is a bit harsh on the woman asking the question, she does raise some valid points.
My issue is, though, we don't really get to see much reaction from the Muslim leaders and communities. Maybe they're doing nothing, but what if they ARE speaking out and it's not being reported? This doesn't help anyone. And I suspect there IS more being said than we see, because even as I type this, I've got the news on and I've heard the word "Muslim" spoken twice in relation to the terrorists in Paris. This, for me, is the bit we need to stop. When the IRA were in full flow, they were not even once referred to as "Catholic extremists", instead they were known as what they were: IRA Terrorists. What we have here are ISIS terrorists. I'd like the media to at least make this distinction.
Or to put it another way: Bollocks

Yes PPLF, they do differ significantly. Bit like yours I guess.
I ask them where they get this opinion from, as I don't see them reading books on history of the regions they claim to know so much about!!
