Stan Collymore
At last...some real sense from Stan on TS.
He's basically saying that defenders work all week on playing offside, then Newcastle have 3 players in an offside position...the rule is pathetic....claiming they are onside.
Time for a change to the rule?
It does have to change:
"Any player in a position beyond the last opposition player, when the ball is played, should be classed as offside"
It's not hard and easier for the refs.
We've had that rule for decades.....this 'for the attacking player' mentality, has created problems.
We rarely see incidents like that....so why have the rule??

Well, I suppose it was bound to happen sooner or later...blueboy wrote:At last...some real sense from Stan on TS.
But it's true, the offside rule isn't especially good and the whole notion of "not interfering with play" is far too open to interpretation. And in any case, if the player isn't interfering with play, he bloody should be, or what's the point of him being on the pitch?
I can sort of see the point when you have a player in an offside position running to get back onside when the ball is played through and he makes no attempt to get the ball, but standing in the six yard box with only the opposing goalie for company is stretching non-interference a bit far. And in this specific instance, he had to move out of the way of Tiote's shot, so really he was in the path of the ball.
Let's make it an easy rule again: If you're in an offside position, you're offside. End of. It works in Rugby well enough.

Although it's fair to say I was channeling the spirit of Shankly, the greatest manager to not get a knighthood. He was a damn sight better than Taggart and in terms of success was only bettered by Bob Paisley.

It will never happen. When have FIFA ever reversed a new rule they introduced?
