Why cancel the matches?

Why cancel the matches?
I dont understand why the premier league hierarchy found it necessary to cancel this weekends fixtures in light of the very sad passing of QE2. In my humble opinion, surely a fitting tribute would have been a minutes silence followed by a rousing rendition of the National Anthem. If City go deep in all competitions which we usually do then it is quite plausible there are only 2 free dates to play the postponed fixtures one in mid jan and one in mid Feb. As it stands January is the nearest free date at the moment unless teams get knocked out of carabao cup and use those dates to fulfill matches.
No other sports appear to have been called off as far as I am aware?

Horse racing and cricket as well.
I can see an argument both ways.
But to me, I think it would look like a case of football flying in the face of public opinion. After 70 years on the throne I would guess that most of the population would think a more congested fixture list is irrelevant.
By the way, I am in no way a monarchist (far from it).

I agree Oz, GSTQ ringing out would have been a fitting tribute.
The downside to this is it's now gonna be rearranged to a midweek game.

It would definitely be more of a fitting tribute, I agree. Plus it would be interesting to see how the press would react to the abuse the anthem would get at Anfield!

Re: Why cancel the matches?
The FA would have to condemn the dippers for their disgraceful behaviour during the minutes silence, and they will never criticise Liverpool.
So the easy way out for them is to cancel all games

Re: Why cancel the matches?
So, it appears there was only a 35 second long ‘minutes silence’ at Anfield, and there was respect from ‘the vast majority’ of fans according to the BBC.
Why not say it like it is? Liverpool could not risk a full minute’s silence and there was shouting and booing from some of their fans. Not so palatable when it’s put like that!
Wrexham are another club that had fans that celebrated vocally the death of a 96 year old. You can dress it up how you like: smiling Jurgen with his beautiful teeth, or Hollywood glamour in North Wales, but the bottom line is that both clubs are followed by knuckle-dragging, inbred mouth breathers.
