If the Rags win.....
tonight, do you think the title's over??
Trailing by 7pts once again, i personally think it is. We have to accept we are not going to go on from here and win every game til the end of the season, this would mean the Rags have to slip up in atleast 6 or 7 games for us to have any chance of overhauling them.....and i can't really see that happening.
With this in mind (and i don't want to get onto a "Bobbys future" thread), i think we're relying on the winning the FA Cup as our only achievable piece of silverware.
What do you lads and lass think?

Re: If the Rags win.....
No.
At more or less the same point last year, United went on to stretch out an 8 point lead over us. If we improved our position by the same amount, we'd be a point in front. And we've still got the games left to do it.
Never say never, Shaken. Even if I just did. Twice...
Realistically, it's not helping to be so far behind. We needed to beat QPR and we didn't. All that this will do is hand the psychological advantage to United and to every other team we still have to play, including Leeds and, if we get past them, anyone else we meet in the cup.
So let's just hope Southampton remember their glorious results against United in their past and relive them with a win. Or at least a draw. At four points, and if we beat them at their place, we're back in it.

Re: If the Rags win.....
Would be nice to see the Saints take points or a point from tonight, but can't really see that. Having said that, we have Yaya and Vinnie to come back and I just think that will be a massive psychological boost.
Last night was 2 points dropped and I believe we would have won by a few if Zaba's header had gone in instead of hitting the bar. I also think that with Yaya last night we would have won comfortably.
I'm very optimistic we can do it again, albeit a very difficult task, and may come down to our result at the swamp.

Re: If the Rags win.....
The problem i have leo, is we're not playing as well as we were last season and that's what worries me. I also don't see the Rags making the same mistakes in the run-in as they did last season either (i obviously hope they do though).
Last night was a great chance for us to put a bit of pressure on the Rags game tonight and we failed....thus handing the initiative right back to the darkside.
Some Rag fans at work have had sneaky digs this morning (fair play), which has pissed me off a little. So like you said, i just hope tonight Soton can produce the goods of yesteryear so i can look forward to work in the morn......sadly, i can't see it though.
After last season, i guess we will always have the "never say never" belief, just wish we had the potential 7pt lead and not them this time round.

Re: If the Rags win.....
Just between us two, Shaken, I share your concerns. I think we all do. We've been waiting and waiting to hit those dizzy heights of quality we had last season and so far we've barely brushed the surface and for the most part we've been sluggish, workmanlike and, in some cases, bloody lucky.
That said, United have hardly been setting the world alight either and if anything it's down to their unbelievable good fortune to have picked up van Persie in his richest ever vein of form and, more crucially, a period where he's not picked up a season ending injury. For me, he's been the difference between us.
I'm also worried that Chelsea are only 7 points behind us and, if they win tonight, that gap will reduce to 4. If we don't kick in soon, we might not even finish second.
But hey, 1999 and all that. We're not dead yet!

ONH,
We are simply assuming that United will have learnt from their mistakes last season and with the gap put the season to bed.
But, we all know what assuming does to us don't we.....

getting beat in a football match is not a mistake & United still have some very tough games to play.

Mistake;
noun...
an error in action, calculation, opinion, or judgment caused by poor reasoning, carelessness, insufficient knowledge, etc.
Explain to me how getting beat in a football match is not a mistake?

Re: If the Rags win.....
Don't think Southampton will win tonight - particularly as Adkins has gone and its at the swamp. He got them playing decently - have to wait and see if the new guy has the same effect.
Some managers can really motivate their players - many teams are low budget - but play so much better than expensively assembled teams. I wish we had one of those managers.

I can think of a couple of good man managers who get their teams playing to their full capacity - and who aren't tactically inept.

Re: If the Rags win.....
The one ray of hope about tonight is that perhaps Baconface may not really know how Southampton are going to play due to the newness of their coach.
I hear he's pretty attack-minded, - I think taking it to the rags is the way to beat them this year - though of course no guarantee.
And regarding the season - not over yet, not by a long way. Not looking great, but bear in mind the fact that if we are to overhaul them we have to get a win at theirs (so only on that basis, I have to count it as a win in my forecasting) - which renders a 7-point gap effectively a four point one - only two games difference.
We just need to go on a big run now - we managed it at the start of last season didn't we?
Anyway, come the end of the week, it could be that we actually gained a point...(hope!)

I watched his first game in charge and they were pressing hard. that may not work for them at OT but at least they'll be in their faces.

I do not want to be a damp squib, but, has anyone compared the remaining fixtures?Compared with last season we have a far harder run in than the rags.It is going to be much harder to repeat, although I would really like it to happen !!

Re: If the Rags win.....
I had the same thoughts CEB - they do have easier fixtures for the remainder of the season. Guess that means they had the hard ones out of the way and are 7 pts clear so far!!

And they were the best team to play at the toilet this season. Which presumably includes the Tottenham side that beat them.... ahem.
Good result for Reading though, keeps Chelsea six points behind us.

Re: If the Rags win.....
Utd must be pissing themselves at the minute. Everyone keeps saying "Utd aren't exactly setting the PL on fire themselves"......thing is, they don't bloody well have to. Ours and Chelseas inconsistancy is handing them the PL title.
Don't worry, i've not forgotten our motto "never say never" .

Re: If the Rags win.....
the trouble with united is they don't know how to lose. When a game looks gone they seem to throw men forward and look like they are going to score in every attack, simiolar to us last season. Our biggest hope this year is for us to re find our lethal shooting boots and for other teams to get right in uniteds face high up the pitch like southampton did in the second half.

Second half last night Fergie was on about. Spurs played well at OT but united battered them in the second half, just one of thoses games.
Uniteds pitch is going to be a big problem if we get anymore really bad wet weather.
