Pepe instead of Mangala?
http://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/382713/EXCLUSIVE-Manchester-City-in-for-Real-Madrid-defender-Pepe-after-Mangala-snub
This is in most papers.
I said a while back that Pepe would be a good signing....but not for this price. £10-15m fair enough.
He's still quick, good tackler, excellent in the air and very good positionally...if MP can temper his rash challenges, he would bring a huge wealth of experience for 2-3 years.
Unless the board have somebody lined up...it looks like we may struggle getting a top class CB this summer.
The only other potential transfer would be Hummels. He's only 25, so may be a better option.

Re: Pepe instead of Mangala?
At least one of Hummels or Subotic should have been a target at some point over the last few years. Maybe they didn't want to come for some reason.
Dimi is excellent back up, but we need someone about 24-26 years old that can partner Kompany for the next 3 or 4 years.

I disagree Den, I think he's a very good defender....I think he gets bad press. He's hot-headed granted...but there's no arguing with his ability. I agree though, we should be looking for a younger replacement.
Also, I see Van Gaal wants Jordi Alba...so maybe it's time we went after Shaw.

I'd rather have Ramos..
Pepe plays RCB which is Kompany's position, Ramos plays LCB and would be perfect.

Re: Pepe instead of Mangala?
I've also said Ramos would the player I would want at City. He's excellent and can play anywhere across the back 4.
Interestingly, Pepe won the 'best defender of the year' vote amongst many of the fans.
If we could get him £10-15m....he'd do a good job for a few years.
After the CL final...Ramos won't be going anywhere now and would be in the £40m+ bracket, if Mangala is worth £35m.

shaw has stated he told Southampton that he wished to join Man utd at their final home game. So it appears he has put his cards on the table.

Won't make any difference if Van Gaal wants Alba instead.

it might not make a difference to van gaal but city splashing out 30 mill on someone who'd rather play for uniturd. No thanks.

Re: Pepe instead of Mangala?
Pepe is 31. Dimi is 33. I wouldn't want us forking out bug bucks for player that may only have 2 years left in him at the top. Benatia looks better value at 28yo and a reported fee of £24m.
Why are we never linked with Hummels or Subotic?

Because they're good, young and cheap

Re: Pepe instead of Mangala?
Maybe the young aspect is the issue... We're supposed to be self-sufficient, but if our academy lads can't break into the first team then our new academy facility becomes a bit of a folly which won't feed us. A player with two years left in him and oodles of experience will be useful because they can pass this on to their upcoming colleagues, who will then not have to wonder when they're going to get a game, or where best to go to in order to get a place.shakencity wrote:Topdawg wrote:Why are we never linked with Hummels or Subotic?
