get them to cancel his contract now. We pay a nominal fee (1st of July of course) that way as a free agent we can sign him now.

Couldn't he have bought the last 6 months out? Ok, we'd have paid the brass, but Porto would have got his wages for 6 months, that's all and he'd have played against Chelsea.
